It's a milestone in anyone's life, the age generally recognised as marking entry into adulthood. For ordinary people, it may mean the right to vote or drink alcohol in bars, but for royals, turning 18 can signal the start of a life of service. There may be new titles, and with them, new responsibilities, especially for those destined to reign.
As the second child of King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, Princess Alexia received a special gift from her father on her 18th birthday this month. He appointed her a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Netherlands Lion and Knight of the House Order of the Golden Lion. She also now has her own personal standard, or flag, which features the national coat of arms. Now that she has finished her secondary education - she studied for an International Baccalaureate in Wales - it's likely that the young Princess will be seen more in public, but still her role will be relatively low-key.

For her classmate at United World College of the Atlantic, Spain's heir Princess Leonor, coming of age will involve rather more fanfare. Leonor, who bears the title of Princess of Asturias, will be expected to swear to uphold the Spanish Constitution, as her father King Felipe did before her.
Another future monarch, Prince Christian, also celebrates his birthday in October. With the throne currently occupied by his grandmother, Queen Margrethe, and his father Crown Prince Frederik the next in line, Christian has time on his side and is in no hurry to throw himself into a weighty royal role. The Palace has already announced that he will not be taking the government funding he is entitled to by law when he turns 18, delaying his 'employment' for a while yet as he continues to focus on his studies. The issue will be revisited when he turns 21 or if there is a change of reign.
