When Michael Jackson died in June 2009 aged 50, he was a controversial figure and even now, years later, that remains true. No one doubts the Thriller hitmaker's extraordinary musical legacy. But what was he like as a person? For his daughter Paris, there's simply no question.  She calls him an "amazing father".

After losing him when she was just 11, Paris was brought up by Michael's mother, Katherine Jackson, along with her siblings Prince and Prince Michael Jackson II. Paris's cousin TJ stepped into the role of father figure, taking over full guardianship as Katherine approached her nineties. Paris, who is following in Michael's footsteps by pursuing a music career, says that her father prepared his kids well for life in the real world. While his home, Neverland, was a lavish fantasy, his children weren't always surrounded by extravagance.

Speaking to Naomi Campbell for YouTube series No Filter, Paris revealed that her dad made sure they didn't take their life of privilege for granted. "My dad was really good about making sure we were cultured, making sure we were educated, and not just showing us like the glitz and glam, like hotel hopping, five-star places," Paris said. "It was also like, we saw everything. We saw third-world countries. We saw every part of the spectrum."

Now 25, Paris, whose godmother was screen goddess Elizabeth Taylor, has worked as an actress, model and singer, but is a "full believer" in "earning" her own success, not relying on her showbiz contacts. That's thanks to her upbringing, she says. "If we wanted five toys, we had to read five books...It's earning it, not just being entitled to certain things or thinking 'oh I got this'. It's like working for it, working hard for it, it's something else entirely. It's an accomplishment," she commented.

Losing Michael was naturally a terrible blow to her, but she has managed to find a positive in it, believing it taught her resilience. Opening up to Rolling Stone magazine she explained: "They always say, 'Time heals.' But it really doesn't. You just get used to it. "I live life with the mentality of 'Okay, I lost the only thing that has ever been important to me.' So going forward, anything bad that happens can't be nearly as bad as what happened before. So I can handle it."
