HORSES

Had she not been destined for other things, “I’d like to be a lady living in the country with lots of horses and dogs,” Elizabeth once declared. She rode competitively in her youth, has enjoyed success as a horse breeder and is still besotted with horse racing, as shown by her beaming smile at Royal Ascot in 2021.

ACTING

As children, Elizabeth and her sister Margaret joined in Christmas pantomimes at Windsor Castle. The reserved future Queen shone onstage, wowing a young Prince Philip when she played Aladdin in 1943. This was during the Second World War, and the money raised went toward the Wool Fund, to make blankets for the armed forces.

DRIVING

Elizabeth first got behind the wheel as a truck driver and mechanic in the Auxiliary Territorial Service in 1945 and still occasionally drives herself and others around her private estates. She is the only person in Britain who doesn’t require a licence, as they’re issued in her name.

PHOTOGRAPHY

She’s used to having her every move documented, but Her Majesty loves to turn the lens on others. Whether at the Royal Windsor Horse Show or visiting the Great Wall of China, she can be counted on to have a camera ready to capture the moment.

CLOTHES

Elizabeth's designer and dresser Angela Kelly reveals: “The Queen loves clothes and is a real expert on fabrics.”  She also has very definite tastes. Why did she wear primrose yellow to Prince William and Kate’s  “wedding of the century” in April 2011? She has loved the colour since childhood, when her mother painted her nursery yellow and often dressed her in the hue, setting trends for toddlers around the world.

CLASSIC COCKTAILS

She has raised many a glass, but the Queen is happiest when sipping sherry or a gin-and-Dubonnet cocktail, which she often enjoys before dinner. Buckingham Palace even sells its own brand of gin, sourced from botanicals grown in the Palace gardens.

GAMES AND PUZZLES

Endless games of cards were played in the royal household, recalled Elizabeth and Margaret’s governess Marion Crawford. The two young Princesses were also fond of puzzles, a passion of the Queen’s  to this day. And she’s  a devoted Scrabble fan,  as was her mother.
