Why Kate is a rare sight at Royal Ascot

It's one tradition she doesn't often take part in

Both royal and fashion fans will be hoping that Britain's new Princess of Wales will make an appearance this month among the elegantly dressed ladies at the famous Royal Ascot horseracing event. But Kate rarely attends this highlight of the summer social season. The Princess has only attended Royal Ascot four times since marrying Prince William – in 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2022. It took her five years as a member of the Firm to make her debut at the big family gathering and what was said to be the late Queen's favourite race meet, which sees Princess Eugenie, Princess Beatrice, the Duchess of Edinburgh and more in attendance.

While she shares many of the Windsors' interests, their love of all things horsey is one area where she differs from them. Unlike the royals, who all learn to ride at a young age, Kate didn't grow up with this traditional country pastime. And though she loves sport in general, she's never expressed a wish to try polo, carriage-driving or any of the other equestrian activities that William's family enjoy.

There may be a practical reason for that. Back in 2009, Australian author Kathy Lette said she spoke to Kate during a polo match where Kate was cheering on her then-boyfriend Prince William. When Kathy asked the royal girlfriend why she didn't play herself, Kate admitted: "I'm allergic to horses."

While Kate isn't fond of equestrian sports or events, she does support her husband when he plays in charity polo matches and is encouraging her children to take up the royal family's favourite hobby. Prince George and Princess Charlotte both learned to ride while still toddlers, George on a tiny Shetland pony belonging to his aunt, Olympic equestrian Zara Tindall.
