Prince Harry's first love

Zimbabwe-born beauty Chelsy Davy still has a special place in his heart

Long before he met Meghan Markle, Prince Harry was besotted with another foreign-born beauty. He and Chelsy Davy - who grew up in Zimbabwe - were together for a total of seven years, from his late teens well into his twenties. There were even rumours of a royal engagement.

The lovebirds started dating in 2004 when the Prince was just 18 and Chelsy 17, after they had crossed paths in Cape Town. As their romance blossomed, vibrant blonde Chelsy met her boyfriend's family, attending his father Prince Charles's 60th birthday celebrations and even meeting his grandmother the late Queen Elizabeth at a society wedding. The relationship lasted, on and off, until 2011. What caused the split? The spotlight trained on Harry certainly seems to have contributed. Speaking to The Times, Chelsy said she "couldn't cope" with the intense scrutiny their romance received. "It was so full-on: crazy and scary and uncomfortable," she explained.

Harry has spoken about Chelsy's difficulties fitting into the royal scene. In his memoir, Spare he writes: "I cherished Chels's carefree and authentic spirit. She never worried about what other people thought. She wore short skirts and high boots, danced with abandon, drank as much tequila as I did, and I cherished all those things about her... but I couldn't help worrying how Granny might feel about them." He adds: "And the last thing I wanted was for Chels to change..."

Timing also played a part in the decision to separate, Harry explains, with Chelsy wanting "to travel, have fun and be young" while he was already committed to his army career. According to the Prince, the lovebirds had "no choice" but to call it quits.

The strength of their bond is clear though, in the fact that they've remained on good terms ever since. Now a jewellery designer, 37-year-old Chelsy was a guest at Harry and Meghan's wedding in 2018. Speaking about the groom, she revealed: "I think we will always be good friends." She has herself found love with hotelier Sam Cutmore-Scott, tying the knot with him in May 2022, five months after welcoming their first child, a baby boy called Leo.
