Britain's hardest-working royals

Once again, 72-year-old Princess Anne took the top spot last year

It's been a tumultous time for the Windsors, due to the death of the family's much-loved matriarch Queen Elizabeth II and the repeated media attacks made on them by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

But following the Queen's example her descendants have remained steadfast in the pursuit of their duties, as shown by data released by The Court Circular, which reveals the number of engagements undertaken by each working royal during the preceding year.

The Queen's only daughter, Princess Anne, is regularly named the hardest-working Windsor, and once again she has proved busiest. At 72, she  shows no sign of slowing down. In fact last July she made no fewer than 24 appearances. Over the whole of 2022, she reached the amazing total of 214.

Anne's brother and Britain's new monarch King Charles III came in just behind her. He has of course taken on a huge amount of extra responsibility since his mother's death in September and as he prepares for his own coronation.

Charles's youngest sibling Prince Edward has, as ever, demonstrated his work ethic and devotion to the crown. Edward took on 143 engagements last year, while his wife Sophie, Countess of Wessex, comes in fourth with just five fewer.

In fifth place is Prince William, who stepped into the role of Prince of Wales when his father became King. William's 126 engagements included his high-profile outing at the Earthshot Prize in America, where he had his loving wife Kate by his side.
