Having found fame Stateside, multitalented Brit James Corden might be expected to stay there. But the actor, comedian and all round TV personality is going home. James, who co-wrote and starred in the long running UK sitcom Gavin and Stacey before crossing the Atlantic has been based in (1) the US since 2015, becoming a hit as host of The Late Late Show with James Corden. After his recent announcement that he was leaving this role, a whopping 1.43 million viewers tuned in to watch the last episode, and many are still talking about one particularly poignant sketch, the Carpool Karaoke with international pop superstar Adele.
Carpool Karaoke was one of the most popular segments (2) of the programme, with clips often going viral. The varied skit involved James driving around with famous singers in the passenger seat, chatting and singing their songs as they went. Some particularly memorable episodes featured Harry Styles, Madonna, Stevie Wonder and Elton John.
As a longtime friend of James and his wife Julia Carey, fellow Brit Adele was a fitting 'passenger' for the very last Carpool. In the intimate segment, she and James reflected on their time in the States (the Hello singer moved to America shortly after he did) in between belting out a medley (3) of Adele’s hits, including Rolling in the Deep.

At one point the two sweetly discuss how they supported each other after their respective moves Stateside (4). James reflected: “It’s been a crazy eight years. In one sense if feels like it’s gone like that [clicks fingers] and in another I feel like I don’t remember what life was like before being here.” Adele responded: “I’ve never lived in LA without you guys so I’m a bit nervous about it, to be honest with you, and very, very sad.”
Fans filled up the comment section, praising the pair for their heartfelt and genuine chat and wishing James all the best. One wrote: “Their friendship is so pure and real. I laughed and had tears watching this. Adele’s final comment saying she’s not ready to come home but if she was it would be with James and his family was just truly beautiful and heartfelt. Also loved Adele for how she never pretends to be something she’s not and same with James, he’s doing what’s best for his family,” while another simply put: “James don't leave us.”
James and his wife have three children, Max, Carey and Charlotte. And back in December he revealed his motivation for relocating his family back to London, telling CBS Mornings: “We’re a long way from home, you know, in Los Angeles, and there’s people at home who are getting older, and we want our kids to know them and be around them. Anyone who’s got kids knows that feeling of just wanting to put down roots (5).”
