It seems that Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn have called time on their romance, breaking up without public fanfare (1), exactly as they spent their years together.

The pair, who began dating in October 2016 after meeting at the MET Gala earlier that year, have both spoken in the past about how important it was to them to keep their relationship private. Having spent most of her late teens and 20s trying to evade the paparazzi's interest in her personal life (high-profile past partners include Jake Gyllenhaal, Tom Hiddleston and Harry Styles), Taylor, 33, made a conscious decision to keep details of her relationship with Joe – who has starred in multiple high-grossing films (2) and series including Mary Queen of Scots and Conversations with Friends – under wraps (3).

Still, fans were shocked by news of the split, which seemed to come completely out of the blue (4). Just months before there were rumours of an engagement between the stars.

According to a source who spoke to Entertainment Tonight, the couple had simply grown apart: “Taylor and Joe are in totally different places in their lives right now. It was more of Taylor’s decision to break up, but both of them realised that they weren’t completely right for one another. They had been together for such a long time and were spending so much time together, but their personalities were just too different. Joe is more introverted, shy and quiet,” the source explained.

Thirty-two-year-old Joe, a north-London native, is the great-grandson of composer William Alwyn. He started his career in the theatre before going on to find screen success, with critics praising the naturalism of his acting. Having played in a band with friends while at school, he returned to the musical arena when he helped Taylor to write some of her hit songs, under the pseudonym William Bowery.

And it is through music that she seems to have expressed her feelings over the break up. Eagle-eyed Swifties (5) noticed a subtle change to her set on her Eras Tour, as she replaced the number “Invisible Swing”, about soulmates, with “The 1”, looking back on a failed romance that almost worked out.
