It can’t be comfortable seeing your family’s story converted into a drama of sometimes dubious accuracy. And now, as the timeline of Netflix’s hit production draws closer to the present day, it is referencing events - like the death of Princess Diana - which are very much alive in the memories of today’s royals.

But it takes more than a TV show  to faze Queen Elizabeth II’s descendants. According to Scottish politician Anas Sarwar, King Charles joked about his portrayal on screen while attending the state opening of the Scottish Parliament last year. "He came over and went, 'Hello, nice to meet you all. I'm nowhere near how they portray me on Netflix',” says Anas.

Charles’s son and heir, Prince William, spoke graciously to one of the lead actors herself about the show. Olivia Colman, who’s among those who have played his grandmother the Queen, met the Prince over dinner.  "He asked what I was doing at the moment before he quickly added, 'Actually, I know what you're doing.' I was so excited and asked, ‘Have you watched it?’ His answer was a firm, ‘No.’ But he was very charming and very lovely," she says.

William’s brother Prince Harry commented on The Crown on The Late Late Show with James Corden, saying: "It's fictional. It's not strictly accurate, but... it gives you a rough idea about that lifestyle."

Meanwhile his cousin Princess Eugenie has praised the show’s cinematography, once telling HELLO!: "It is filmed beautifully. The music is wonderful."
