She had been due to host the world leaders at the Cop26 climate change summit in Scotland, but under doctors’ orders to rest, Britain’s Queen Elizabeth remained at home in Windsor Castle, instead delivering a powerful speech by video message, urging the high-powered delegates to take action to save the planet. And despite being 400 miles away, her rallying (1) cry to world leaders to “rise above the politics of the time and achieve true statesmanship” was a masterpiece in soft diplomacy.

Wearing a vivid (2) green dress to underline her call to protect nature, the 95-year-old monarch’s compelling words, recorded in the White Drawing Room against a backdrop of autumn trees seen through the windows, were broadcast to open the reception for chief negotiators on the first day of the autumn summit and eloquently encapsulated the urgency of the matter at hand.

But as well as helping set this historic agenda, her rousing, heartfelt (3) speech held a deeply personal meaning, too. A striking (4) framed photograph next to her captured an image of her beloved husband the Duke of Edinburgh surrounded by a swirl of monarch butterflies, captured on camera in Mexico in 1988. Prince Philip was a passionate environmentalist who helped advance the cause of conservation for six decades until his death in April at the age of 99. In a further subtle tribute to the Duke, the Queen also wore her ruby and diamond butterfly brooch, a wedding present from 1947.

After being introduced by Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness, the Queen spoke of her pride in her husband’s, son’s and grandson’s dedication to environmental causes.

The heir to the throne, Prince Charles, was a passionate champion of green issues decades before they became mainstream (5). With his own organic farm and an Aston Martin car that runs on wine and cheese waste, he believes in putting his words into action. As for the second-in-line, Prince William, he is responsible for the pioneering Earthshot Prize which awards innovatory environmental solutions.
