Sandra Bullock tragically lost her partner Bryan Randall on August 5, 2023, and three years later, the actress is opening up about his ALS battle for the first time. At Randall’s request, Bullock kept the diagnosis a secret as she balanced his care and life at home with their children during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bullock had never publicly discussed his diagnosis before, but on SmartLess, the SiriusXM podcast hosted by her friend Jason Bateman alongside Will Arnett and Sean Hayes, she shared heartbreaking details.

The Miss Congeniality star revealed she "wasn't allowed to speak about it." "That was the request,” Bullock said. She understood why Randall wanted to keep his diagnosis private, but that didn't make carrying the secret any easier.

For a while, Bullock said, only her sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, knew what was happening. “I wasn’t allowed to tell anybody,” she said, adding that she couldn't even tell Bateman's wife, Amanda Anka, who is part of her close inner circle.

“At first I go, ‘Oh, I can handle that. I can be quiet,’” Bullock recalled. But as Randall's condition progressed and his health deteriorated behind closed doors, the reality of what she was carrying became harder to process.

Bullock was on the front lines, helping coordinate Randall's care and searching for treatments, including trial drugs and different therapies, while their family was living through the pandemic.

“I don’t wanna harm others because of what I do, so I think not talking for a while was good,” she explained, admitting it left her feeling isolated.

According to Bullock, she started to grieve her partner before he passed. “Where he was in his journey, both physically and mentally, I started grieving Brian four years before he passed,” Bullock said. “There was something that had shifted."

“My person left a lot earlier than the body left,” she continued. “I don’t think I ever dealt with that until after he passed, because you’re just on this treadmill.”

Bullock and Randall were raising Louis and Laila together, and the actress said both children understood that something serious was happening. “I can see and be around just about anything,” Bullock said. “But I had two young kids that were navigating it — especially a little girl who saw him as a father figure.”

Bullock said her son, Louis, began recognizing the dynamic between his mother and Randall about two years before Randall died. “He saw it was a dynamic that wasn’t healthy for him to be around,” she said.

Louis chose to support his mother in ways that felt manageable for him. "He smartly disengaged himself and said, ‘This is a safer space for me to sit,’” Bullock recalled “I didn’t want him to become the man of the family at that age,” she said. “My job is to be both at that time,” Bullock explained. “And I want him to be a kid during a pandemic when everything is already f--ked anyway and people are suffering everywhere.”

Laila had a different relationship with Randall and remained bonded with him until roughly six months before his death. “Then she says, ‘Can you please say no when they call me over to go visit?’” Bullock recalled.

Bullock told her daughter she would respect that request. “And I said, ‘Absolutely, but if you do wanna go visit, I will come with you, and I will be right there. And if you tap out, I am right there,’” she said.

Bullock and Randall first began dating in 2015 after he was hired to photograph Louis' birthday party. Although the actress rarely discussed their relationship publicly, she gave fans an unusually intimate glimpse into their family during a 2021 appearance on Red Table Talk.

Bullock described k as the “love of my life” and spoke about the role he played in raising her children. Before adopting Laila, the actress recalled telling him that she wanted to expand their family, and that he was thrilled but initially scared.

“He was so happy, but he was scared,” Bullock said at the time. “I’m a bulldozer. My life was already on the track, and here’s this beautiful human being who doesn’t want anything to do with my life but [was] the right human being to help me,” she continued.

Rest in peace.
