Hugh Grant may not seem like an obvious member of Taylor Swift's inner circle, but the actor has quietly developed a genuine friendship with the pop superstar over the past two years.

When Swift and Travis Kelce tied the knot during a lavish black-tie wedding at New York City's Madison Square Garden on Friday, July 3, Grant was among the star-studded guest list. His appearance surprised many fans, who questioned how the British actor ended up at one of Hollywood's biggest celebrations.

While the invitation may have seemed unexpected, Grant and Swift have shared a warm connection ever since crossing paths during the European leg of the Eras Tour.

Hugh Grant's Surprise Appearance Sparked Fan Reactions

Swift and Kelce's wedding drew an estimated 1,000 guests, including many of the singer's closest friends and the NFL star's Kansas City Chiefs teammates.

Celebrities including Selena Gomez, Lena Dunham, Gigi Hadid and numerous A-list stars were spotted arriving for the celebration. However, Grant's attendance quickly became one of the biggest talking points online.

Many social media users joked that Swift had invited "anybody and everybody," while others called the guest list "unhinged" after spotting the Notting Hill actor among the attendees.

Their Friendship Began During the Eras Tour

Grant first connected with Swift when he attended one of her Eras Tour concerts at London's Wembley Stadium in June 2024.

The actor was joined by his wife, Anna Eberstein, and one of their daughters for the sold-out show, which also featured Travis Kelce's now-famous onstage appearance.

Afterward, Grant took to X to publicly thank Swift for the experience.

"Dear @taylorswift13, You have an incredible show, an amazing and v hospitable team and excellent if gigantic boyfriend (#tequilashots.). Thanks so much from one ageing London boy, wife and thrilled 8 year old #halfgirlhalfbracelet," he wrote.

The heartfelt post quickly went viral, amassing millions of views as Swifties celebrated Grant's enthusiastic embrace of the fandom.

One fan even replied that his wife had gifted Grant a friendship bracelet at the concert.

"My wife gave you a friendship bracelet and I received a text saying how thrilled she was and how very charming you were so thank you for giving her that memory," the fan wrote.

"I am now fully expecting Hugh Grant movie marathons this week at her request."

Taylor Swift Had the Perfect Response

Swift eventually spotted Grant's message and couldn't hide her excitement.

"As a long time Hugh Grant stan this tweet is very important to my culture," she replied, delighting fans who loved seeing two beloved stars interact.

The exchange cemented what appeared to be the beginning of an unexpected friendship.

Travis Kelce's Hilarious Case of Mistaken Identity

Their connection resurfaced months later when Swift shared a funny behind-the-scenes story during an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

She explained that Kelce would often spend time chatting with celebrity guests in the VIP tent before filling her in after each Eras Tour performance.

Before the London concert, Swift told Kelce that one of his favorite filmmakers, Greta Gerwig, would be attending.

"Before London I was like 'I have to let you know, your favourite director is in the tent,'" Swift recalled. "He loves Greta Gerwig. He loves her movies."

Kelce eagerly planned to compliment the Barbie director, but after the show he unknowingly approached the wrong person.

While recounting the evening, he proudly told Swift he had spoken with "Greta," adding, "I think I told an annoying joke that she's heard too many times, I said 'I love Barbie! I'm just Ken, too,' then pointed to you."

Swift quickly realized something didn't add up. As Kelce described "Greta" spending the entire evening talking with Hugh Grant, the singer pieced together what had actually happened.

"So I do the math and I'm like, 'is there any chance at all, baby, that you complimented Hugh Grant's wife, Anna, on her movie, Barbie?'" Swift joked.

"'And she politely nodded, because she didn't have the heart to tell you she didn't direct it? And is there any chance that the people who looked like soulmates were actually Hugh Grant and his soulmate?'"

The lighthearted story became a fan favorite, and judging by Grant and Eberstein's appearance at Swift and Kelce's wedding, there were clearly no hard feelings. Instead, the memorable mix-up appears to have become just another funny chapter in the unlikely friendship between the singer, her NFL husband, and the beloved British actor.
