The global superstar arrived at the VMAs in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 27, without her husband, prompting an obvious question about why Kelce wasn’t there for the major career milestone.
The explanation is simpler than any relationship speculation. Kelce had another major commitment that same day, and it was happening thousands of miles away.

Travis Kelce couldn’t attend the VMAs with Taylor Swift because the Kansas City Chiefs were playing the Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. The Chiefs-Dolphins game kicked off at 1 p.m. ET on September 27, only hours before the VMAs festivities got underway across the country in Los Angeles.
The tight end was on the field as Kansas City defeated Miami 24-10, improving the Chiefs’ record to 3-0. Kelce even had his own standout moment during the game. Patrick Mahomes connected with him for an 11-yard touchdown in the Chiefs’ victory.

Taylor Swift attended the VMAs solo for a huge career moment
Kelce may have been absent, but Swift had plenty to celebrate at the 2026 MTV VMAs. The 36-year-old singer received the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors, an award recognizing her work behind the camera and her contributions to visual storytelling through music videos. Dakota Johnson, who appears in Swift’s new “Patient Zero” music video, presented her with the honor.

Johnson also highlighted just how closely Swift’s career has become connected to directing. “She is the single most recognized video director in this show's history,” she said.

When Swift took the stage, she reflected on two decades of creating music videos and revealed how much her role behind the camera has expanded. “I’ve gotten to be a part of making 60 music videos, roughly 60,” Swift said, adding that she wrote and directed 18 of them.
Swift also made it clear that fan enthusiasm remains a major reason she enjoys directing. “The main reason why I love writing and directing music videos so much is because you, the fans, make it so much fun,” she said.

Kelce’s absence at the VMAs shouldn’t be read as a lack of support. In a September interview with Vogue, cited by ELLE, Kelce praised Swift’s personal style and the way she approaches fashion. “I love that Tay’s always authentically herself with every look,” Kelce said. “She’s always effortless, elegant, and beautiful.”
