Serena Williams may not have secured the victory she hoped for in her long-awaited return to Wimbledon, but she walked away with something arguably just as meaningful: the admiration of her family and millions of fans. After nearly four years away from competitive singles tennis, the 44-year-old legend made an emotional comeback at the 2026 Wimbledon Championships, where her husband, Alexis Ohanian, proudly declared she was "an inspiration."

The tech entrepreneur took to Instagram after the match to celebrate his wife, sharing heartfelt photos from Centre Court alongside their daughters, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. and Adira River Ohanian.

"Our little family is so proud of you @serenawilliams. Even though it wasn't the outcome you wanted, you're an inspiration," Ohanian wrote. He added that their daughters were thrilled to stay up a little past bedtime to watch their mom compete on one of tennis' biggest stages.

Serena Williams Falls in Three-Set Wimbledon Battle

Williams returned to singles competition for the first time since stepping away from professional tennis nearly four years ago. Facing 20-year-old Australian rising star Maya Joint in the opening round, the seven-time Wimbledon singles champion showed flashes of the brilliance that made her one of the greatest players in tennis history.

Joint claimed the opening set 6-3 in just 35 minutes, but Williams refused to go quietly.

The American icon elevated her game in the second set, breaking Joint's serve three consecutive times during a dramatic stretch. She battled through a tense tiebreak, overcoming deficits on multiple occasions to force a deciding third set and ignite the Centre Court crowd.

Ultimately, the physical demands of her comeback appeared to take their toll. Williams faded late in the match, allowing Joint to close out the contest 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-3 and advance to the second round.

Family Support Filled Centre Court

Despite the disappointing result, Williams received a hero's welcome as she stepped onto Centre Court. The crowd erupted in applause, recognizing one of the sport's greatest champions making an unlikely return.

Watching proudly from the players' box were Ohanian, their daughters, Williams' sister Venus Williams, and Venus' partner, Andrea Preti.

One day after the match, Williams shared another update with fans on Instagram, revealing she had suffered a knee injury during the opening set. "I tweaked my knee late in the first set, but I'll be doing everything I can to be ready for doubles with @venuswilliams," she wrote.

The tennis legend also reflected on what made the comeback worthwhile, regardless of the result. "It felt so good to be back on the grass at @wimbledon. I'm incredibly thankful for the wild card and even more grateful my daughters got to see that it's never too late to chase something you love."
