King Philippe traveled to Belgium's Liège province as devastating wildfires continued to tear through the High Fens, where more than 3,000 hectares of natural land have already been ravaged by flames.
The Belgian monarch headed directly into the affected region to meet the emergency teams working to bring the fires under control and protect nearby communities.
According to the Belgian Royal Palace, more than 500 responders have been mobilized as efforts to contain the blaze continue.
The King is briefed on the crisis:
King Philippe's visit began at the provincial crisis center in Vottem, where he was briefed on the latest developments and the operations underway in response to the fires.
The 66-year-old royal then traveled to the coordination center established near the affected area, putting him closer to the front lines of the emergency. Images shared by the Royal Palace showed Philippe surrounded by firefighters and other responders, with smoke visibly hanging over the area.
During the visit, the King met members of the teams working on the ground and learned more about their efforts to battle the flames and ensure the safety of the population.
The scale of the response reflects the severity of the situation. With thousands of hectares already destroyed, hundreds of emergency personnel remain involved in the operation to bring the fires under control.
A monarch present during moments of crisis:
Philippe's appearance in Liège comes as Belgium confronts the environmental and public safety impact of the fires in the High Fens, one of the country's best-known natural regions.
The visit also placed the monarch alongside the first responders carrying out the difficult work on the ground. Rather than limiting his visit to the crisis center, Philippe traveled to the coordination point near the fires, where he was able to speak directly with those involved in the response.
The Belgian Royal Palace documented the visit as emergency operations continued, highlighting both the extent of the devastation and the hundreds of people working to contain it.
The King's presence also drew an emotional response online, with many royal followers thanking him for showing support for firefighters, emergency personnel and volunteers.
One commenter wrote, "Thank you, Sire, for supporting your people and the emergency services with your presence," while another thanked Philippe for coming to "encourage all the responders and volunteers fighting the fire in the High Fens."
Others used the Palace's post to raise questions about Belgium's political leadership and the resources available to emergency crews. Several commenters asked where the country's prime minister was, while another urged the King to help ensure firefighters had greater means to intervene.
