The wait for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is finally over, and Mexico City Stadium was transformed into a vibrant celebration of passion, culture, and sport. Shakira, J Balvin, and Belinda brought the music to the opening ceremony, once again showcasing the power of Latin talent on the global stage.
Just before the tournament’s opening match between Mexico and South Africa kicked off, another major star stepped into the spotlight to welcome the world to the host nation: Salma Hayek.
The Mexican actress, who has become a prominent cultural ambassador for her country, appeared at midfield to speak on behalf of the nation where she was born and which she proudly represents.
“The World Cup returns to this land, to this stadium, and together with Canada and the United States, we welcome the entire world as we receive the flags of the 48 nations qualified for the FIFA World Cup Mexico 2026,” Salma said at the start of her remarks.
“We Mexicans are deeply honored that the first match of this wonderful football tradition that brings us all together begins here,” continued the Veracruz-born actress before closing her speech with a phrase that embodies the pride shared by her fellow countrymen.
“¡Viva México!” she declared enthusiastically.
“And long live football!” she added.
Salma looked stunning for the historic occasion. The 58-year-old actress wore an elegant red pantsuit featuring wide-leg trousers and a tailored blazer that highlighted her silhouette. She paired the look with a Gucci blouse and black heels, while wearing her signature dark hair loose.
After addressing the crowd at Mexico City Stadium and viewers around the world, Salma was spotted in a prime location alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino. The executive presented the coveted World Cup trophy that teams will compete for throughout the tournament, and the Mexican star had the opportunity to hold it herself.
Moments later, following the national anthems, including Mexico’s, performed by Alejandro Fernández, the opening match between Mexico and South Africa officially got underway.
As Salma noted in her speech, Mexico and the venue formerly known as Estadio Azteca have hosted the World Cup before. The stadium first welcomed the tournament in 1970, when Brazil captured the title under the leadership of the legendary Pelé. Sixteen years later, in 1986, Mexico once again became the host nation after Colombia unexpectedly withdrew.
That tournament proved equally memorable, as Argentina claimed its second World Cup title with Diego Armando Maradona, whose unforgettable “Hand of God” goal became one of the most iconic moments in football history.
