While Tom Brady established one of the most decorated careers in NFL history over more than two decades, a new biography indicates that his unwavering devotion to the sport exacted a high personal toll.

“Brady: An American Story and the Price of Greatness,” a new biography by veteran sportswriter Lars Anderson, takes a closer look at the seven-time Super Bowl champion’s life away from the field, including the breakdown of his 13-year marriage to Gisele Bündchen.

And when it comes to his divorce, the book paints a picture of a marriage that had reportedly been under pressure for years.
What Tom Brady’s New Biography Says About His Divorce
According to the biography, tensions over Brady’s football career existed long before the couple announced their divorce in October 2022.
Anderson reports that after Brady led the New England Patriots to a historic Super Bowl comeback in 2017, Bündchen asked him, “Would now be the perfect time to retire?” Brady reportedly wasn’t ready, responding later, “Too bad, babe. I’m having too much fun right now.”

According to Anderson, Bündchen wrote Brady a handwritten letter after the Patriots’ 2018 Super Bowl loss explaining that she needed more from their marriage. “She needed more of him, more of his time, more of his attention, more of his heart,” Anderson writes.
The biography says Bündchen wanted Brady to be more present when he was home, help more with their children, and leave more room for her own career. Anderson also reports that the couple later sought counseling as they tried to work through their problems.
Tom Brady Reportedly Tried to Save His Marriage
One of the book’s biggest revelations concerns Brady’s mysterious 11-day absence from Tampa Bay Buccaneers training camp in August 2022.
At the time, his absence attracted plenty of attention. Anderson now reports that Brady left camp to meet Bündchen at a private resort in the Bahamas in an attempt to repair their relationship. “I’ve got to take care of some personal things,” Brady reportedly told Buccaneers coach Clyde Christensen before leaving.
© Getty Images for The Met Museum/An assistant coach interviewed for the book recalled the uncertainty surrounding Brady’s departure. “Tom didn’t know what the heck was going on,” the coach said, according to Anderson. “And we didn’t know if he was ever coming back.”
The attempt apparently did not resolve the problems. When Brady returned to training camp, Christensen recalled seeing a dramatically different version of the quarterback. “There was no joy. Everything was hard work,” Christensen said.
Did Gisele Bündchen Tell Tom Brady They Were “Not Compatible”?
Perhaps the most attention-grabbing claim in Anderson’s book concerns what Bündchen allegedly told Brady near the end of their marriage. An unnamed insider close to Brady claims Bündchen consulted astrology and ultimately told him, “We’re not compatible.”
The insider claimed that after that conversation, Bündchen had made her decision. Neither Brady nor Bündchen has publicly confirmed Anderson’s version of that private exchange.

In a 2023 interview, she described the breakup as more complicated than the narrative that Brady’s decision to continue playing football single-handedly ended their marriage. “Sometimes you grow together; sometimes you grow apart,” she said.
Bündchen explained that they eventually realized they wanted different things, describing the end of the marriage as “the death of my dream.”
What Tom Brady Has Said About the Divorce
Brady has generally kept the details of his marriage private, but his public comments provide additional context for Anderson’s account. Shortly after the divorce was finalized in October 2022, Brady described the split as “a very amicable situation” and said his priorities were taking care of his family and children while continuing to do his job on the football field.
In their original divorce announcement, Brady said he and Bündchen had reached the decision “amicably and with gratitude for the time we spent together.” He acknowledged that ending the marriage was “painful and difficult” while emphasizing their commitment to their children.

He explained that he was dealing with “a personal family issue” and said the situation “took a lot out of me” when it came to his ability to continue playing.
Brady ultimately retired from the NFL for good in February 2023 at age 45. He later said that after 23 seasons, he was ready to redirect his time toward his children. “I wanted to spend time with my kids,” Brady said, adding that it was finally time for him to attend their games after they had spent years watching his.
Gisele Bündchen Has Pushed Back on the Simple Football Narrative
While Anderson’s biography puts considerable emphasis on Brady’s devotion to football, Bündchen has previously challenged the idea that their divorce can be reduced to his decision to keep playing.
Her own account suggests the couple had evolved in different directions over time. “When you love someone, you don’t put them in a jail and say, ‘You have to live this life,’” she said in 2023.

Celadon Books describes the biography as an examination of the “true cost of greatness,” with Anderson exploring how Brady’s intense discipline affected his schedule, diet, relationships, and approach to being a husband and father.
