Luren Márquez’s road to Miss Universe 2026 has come to an abrupt end. The Organización Miss Perú has officially announced that Márquez is no longer Miss Peru 2026 and will not represent the country at the upcoming Miss Universe competition in Puerto Rico.

The unexpected announcement arrived just four months after the 27-year-old model, presenter and cultural promoter was crowned as Peru’s national representative.

Why was Miss Peru 2026 Luren Márquez dethroned?

On August 13, the Organización Miss Perú released a brief statement announcing that Márquez would no longer hold the Miss Peru 2026 title. According to the statement, her planned participation at Miss Universe 2026 in Puerto Rico has also been canceled.

The organization said it would provide more information in the coming days about the woman who will represent Peru instead. The announcement shared by the organization did not provide a reason for the decision.

As of August 14, there is no publicly confirmed explanation from the Organización Miss Perú for Márquez's removal. Reports from RPPTV Perú and Infobae similarly note that the organization announced her departure without explaining what prompted it.

Luren Márquez was crowned Miss Peru just four months ago

Márquez was crowned Miss Peru 2026 on April 15 at the Teatro Municipal del Callao. Karla Bacigalupo, Miss Peru 2025, handed over the crown during the ceremony, which was also attended by Miss Universe 2025 Fátima Bosch.

Márquez's selection was unusual because she did not win the title through a traditional national competition.

In a May interview with El Comercio, Márquez explained that the Miss Peru organization had directly selected her after discussions with the Miss Universe organization. She said she had initially wanted to compete for the crown but was ultimately given the opportunity to prove herself on the international stage in Puerto Rico.

The decision gave her several months to prepare for Miss Universe. Now that plan has been scrapped.

Who is Luren Márquez?

Márquez, who is from Ica, was hardly a newcomer to pageants when she became Miss Peru. She began modeling as a teenager and previously competed in pageants including Miss Teen Perú. She was also the first runner-up at Miss Peru 2024 before eventually receiving the national crown in 2026.

Her background extends beyond pageantry. According to previous profiles, Márquez studied Business Administration at the University of Lima and pursued Communication studies with a focus related to digital marketing at Florida International University. She has also worked as a presenter and cultural promoter, per RPP Noticias.

Just weeks before losing her title, Márquez spoke publicly about preparing to represent Peru internationally. A July profile from People en Español presented her as Peru's incoming Miss Universe contestant and detailed her journey from growing up in Ica to preparing for the global competition.

That makes the sudden August announcement an especially dramatic reversal.

Who will replace Luren Márquez at Miss Universe 2026?

For now, Peru does not have a publicly announced replacement. The Organización Miss Perú said it will reveal more information in the coming days about who will represent the country at Miss Universe.

No successor was named in the initial announcement, so any names circulating before an official confirmation should be treated cautiously. The replacement will also have significantly less preparation time than Márquez originally had.

While many national competitions are still scheduled for the coming weeks and months, several countries have already crowned their representatives.

Miss Universe 2026 is scheduled to take place in Puerto Rico in November, meaning Peru's incoming contestant will have only a matter of months to prepare for one of the world's biggest international pageants.

When is Miss Universe 2026?

The 75th Miss Universe competition is scheduled for November 24, 2026, at the Coliseo José Miguel Agrelot in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Márquez had been expected to join contestants from around the world in Puerto Rico before the Organización Miss Perú withdrew her representation.

Her replacement will now inherit that assignment.
