Former Miss North Carolina USA Brittany Boltinhouse is escalating her dispute with pageant officials after being stripped of her 2026 title just weeks before she was expected to represent the state at the Miss USA competition.
Boltinhouse has retained attorney Patrick Mincey, whose Wilmington, North Carolina, law firm says it is investigating the circumstances surrounding her removal and preparing for anticipated legal action. The dispute comes after the Miss USA Organization and the state pageant leadership said her reign ended following a review of recently surfaced information and conduct they said conflicted with organizational standards.

Why Was Brittany Boltinhouse Stripped of Miss North Carolina USA 2026?
Boltinhouse, 27, won the Miss North Carolina USA 2026 crown in June and had been preparing to compete at the 75th Miss USA pageant in Miami. That changed on August 5.
A Blaize Productions, which produces the Miss North Carolina USA pageant, announced that Boltinhouse's reign had ended after what it described as careful consideration, multiple conversations and consultation with the Miss USA Organization.
Pageant officials said they conducted a review of recently surfaced information but initially did not publicly detail all of the material behind their decision. Miss USA chairman and CEO Thom Brodeur said the organization does not tolerate racism, homophobia, transphobia or degrading language. He also said the decision was not based on one isolated incident but reflected conduct over an extended period.
Reports surrounding the controversy have pointed to older social media posts attributed to Boltinhouse. The New York Post reported that posts allegedly made under an alias between 2017 and 2019 included the use of a racial slur.
Boltinhouse has since challenged the circumstances surrounding her removal.
Brittany Boltinhouse Hires Attorney and Prepares Legal Action
The dispute took another turn when attorney Patrick Mincey announced that he had been retained to represent Boltinhouse.
According to ABC News, Mincey said his firm is representing the former titleholder in connection with "anticipated legal action" and described the removal as wrongful and unjustified. As of ABC News' August 11 report, it remained unclear whether any eventual legal action would target the Miss USA Organization, state pageant producer A Blaize Productions, or another party.
Some reports have described Boltinhouse as already taking legal action, but the strongest current reporting indicates that her attorneys are investigating and preparing for anticipated legal action rather than confirming that a lawsuit has already been filed. WRAL similarly reported that Mincey's law firm had been hired to investigate the decision.
Mincey has also alleged that Boltinhouse was targeted because of her Christian faith and conservative political views. Those are allegations from her legal team, not findings established by a court or independent investigation. He added that the investigation will “focused on one objective: uncovering and presenting the full truth behind what appears to be another troubling example of cancel culture directed at a young woman because of her deeply held religious convictions and publicly expressed political beliefs.”
Did Brittany Boltinhouse Say Politics Cost Her the Crown?
Boltinhouse has publicly raised that possibility. In an interview following her removal, she said she believes her conservative Christian beliefs contributed to the loss of her title. When specifically questioned about whether support for President Donald Trump could have played a role, however, she said she did not know. She has also indicated that a confidentiality agreement limits what she can publicly discuss about the dispute.
Her attorney has taken the argument further, framing the controversy as a case involving religious convictions and political expression.

First runner-up Myla Hadley has now assumed the Miss North Carolina USA 2026 title.
Hadley is expected to represent North Carolina at the Miss USA competition after Boltinhouse's removal. The succession followed the pageant's established procedures, according to the state organization.
That means the pageant is moving forward even as the former titleholder prepares to challenge the circumstances that ended her reign.
