Puerto Rico is getting an early taste of Miss Universe excitement as international contestants arrive on the island ahead of the pageant's highly anticipated 75th anniversary celebration.
Seventeen Miss Universe 2026 contestants are visiting Puerto Rico from October 6 through October 9 for a special experience showcasing the island's culture, food, history, natural attractions, and tourism offerings. Miss Universe Puerto Rico 2026 Jennifer Barreto is joining the group as its 18th contestant and serving as host during the visit.
The early arrivals offer pageant fans a preview of what is coming when Puerto Rico welcomes the wider field of international delegates for Miss Universe 2026 in November.
Which Miss Universe contestants are in Puerto Rico?
The visiting contestants represent Argentina, Aruba, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, Curaçao, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela.
Puerto Rico's Jennifer Barreto has taken on a particularly important role. Rather than simply participating in the activities, the reigning Miss Universe Puerto Rico is welcoming her fellow contestants and accompanying them as they experience the island.
On October 7, Barreto welcomed the group as the delegates began making appearances in Puerto Rico, marking one of the first major gatherings of contestants on the island ahead of the competition.
For fans following the road to Miss Universe 2026, the visit also provides an early opportunity to see contestants interact outside the formal competition setting.
Why are Miss Universe contestants arriving early?
This week's visit is separate from the main Miss Universe 2026 concentration scheduled closer to the November pageant.
The Puerto Rico Tourism Company organized the October 6 to 9 experience to introduce the contestants to different parts of the island and use the international reach of Miss Universe to promote Puerto Rico as a travel destination. Each of the 17 visiting delegates is being paired with a local host who will help introduce her to Puerto Rican culture, history, cuisine, nature and hospitality.
The contestants are also expected to share parts of their experiences through their digital and social media platforms, potentially putting Puerto Rico in front of audiences across several international markets.
The strategy makes the Miss Universe celebration about more than the final night. Puerto Rico is positioning the pageant as a months-long opportunity to highlight the island's tourism industry and cultural identity.
Miss Universe 2026 puts Puerto Rico in the global spotlight
This year's competition carries additional significance because it marks the 75th anniversary of Miss Universe.
The Miss Universe Organization announced Puerto Rico as the host of the anniversary edition in September 2025, bringing the international competition back to the island after more than two decades. The main event will take place at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot, commonly known as the Choliseo, in San Juan.
More than 130 representatives from countries and territories around the world are expected to compete, according to the Miss Universe Organization.
That means the 17 contestants arriving in October represent only an early preview of the much larger international gathering Puerto Rico is preparing to host.
Jennifer Barreto steps into her Miss Universe host role
For Jennifer Barreto, hosting the visiting contestants offers a unique advantage and responsibility.
The Puerto Rican beauty queen gets to welcome her competitors on home soil while introducing them to the culture she will represent on the Miss Universe stage.
Her role also makes the 2026 competition unusual for the Puerto Rican representative. Barreto will not simply arrive at an international destination to compete. She will compete in front of a home crowd while simultaneously serving as one of the faces of Puerto Rico throughout the festivities.
That home-field moment is likely to make her appearances particularly closely watched as November approaches.
When is Miss Universe 2026 in Puerto Rico?
The 75th Miss Universe competition will take place in Puerto Rico in November 2026, with the Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot serving as the centerpiece of the celebration.
Before then, the October visit gives pageant watchers their first substantial look at several of the women preparing to compete for the crown.
As more contestants eventually arrive from around the world, attention will increasingly turn to preliminary events, fashion, national costumes, frontrunners, and, of course, Jennifer Barreto's attempt to capture another Miss Universe crown for Puerto Rico.
For now, the first arrivals have officially shifted the countdown into a new phase. Miss Universe season is beginning to feel very real in Puerto Rico.
