Aquino's mother, Lilia Aquino, later spoke publicly about losing her daughter.
According to People, she was in the United States when she learned about Wualys' death. She described receiving the devastating news and immediately communicating with relatives in Honduras as she tried to understand what had happened.
"I've had plenty of time alone to weep for my little girl," Lilia said. "From the moment I got the call while I was in the States, I told my sister not to let anyone touch her because I was coming back for her."
Adding: "I still feel like she's close to me."
