Elizabeth Hurley and Billy Ray Cyrus became one of the biggest surprise romances in the industry. The pair, who hail from different continents and are known for their different cultural imprints, have been involved in a long-term relationship that stands strong and has required both to adapt to their circumstances, including plenty of international travel.
In an interview with PEOPLE, Cyrus and Hurley discussed their romance and shared a candid look at their relationship. "She came into my life in the making of this album," said Cyrus, referring to his upcoming record "The Hill."
Cyrus revealed that to pursue his relationship with Hurley, he traveled internationally and left Tennessee for the first time in five years, calling it "craziest thing" he's ever done. "But I had to do it. This feels like something real."
For her part, Hurley shed a better look at what their lives look like, involving plenty of travel and spending time where the other person is. "We split our time between Billy's farm in Tennessee and my country house in England, with brief forays into Nashville and London. We both love the countryside, where I'm usually wielding power tools in the garden whilst Billy strums his guitar under a tree," she said.
"We obsessively watch birds of prey and light lots of bonfires. It's bliss."
Cyrus commented on how opposite the two appear to be, something that many outlets had noted, and how surprised he was to discover that they're very similar people at heart. "There was something in the opposites of us, I think, that maybe not only got other people's attention but even our own," he said.
"And I've never seen anybody that, in some ways, has more in common with the insanity that I have lived through in this crazy show business. Then mix in other personal, good things and tragedies — she's like me."
Cyrus and Hurley's focus on family
A topic that's very important to their relationship is their families. Hurley has one son, Damian, while Cyrus has six children of his own, including musicians Miley, Noah, and Braison Cyrus.
"I love that Billy and my son Damian get on so well and spend a lot of time together. In the past year I've really enjoyed starting to get to know some of his kids too," said Hurley. "He's been so happy making his new album with Braison and Noah and it was a huge treat being on the set with him when he shot the Hannah Montana anniversary special with Miley."
Cyrus' album seems to capture the happy moment he's living in, where he's at peace in love and with his family. "I do feel at this moment a calm and a peace of mind of knowing that I'm on the right path—and certainly love feels good," he said. "I can't give enough credit to what Elizabeth has brought to my life."
