Prince Albert II of Monaco and Princess Charlene have joined European royals in expressing their condolences following the devastating train collision in Spain.
The couple shared a heartfelt message addressed directly to King Felipe VI, offering their support to the Spanish royal family and the victims of the tragedy.
On Wednesday, October 28, Monaco's Prince's Palace published a formal letter signed by Prince Albert, revealing the royal couple's emotional reaction to the accident in the Toledo region, which has claimed dozens of lives and left many others injured.
"Princess Charlene and I learned with deep emotion of the tragic railway accident that occurred in the Toledo region," Prince Albert wrote in the letter, translated from French.
The message, addressed to "Your Majesty," reflected the close diplomatic ties between the two European monarchies and extended beyond the royal couple's personal condolences.
"My family and the entire Monegasque population join me in expressing our profound sadness in the face of this tragedy that has struck your country," the Prince continued.
Albert also acknowledged the families grieving the loss of loved ones, those recovering from injuries and the emergency workers responding to the disaster.
"Our thoughts are with the bereaved families, the injured, as well as all the emergency response teams mobilized," he wrote.
The letter concluded with a personal expression of support for the Spanish monarch: "Please accept the expression of our sincere condolences and our support during this painful ordeal."
King Felipe and Queen Letizia receive messages of solidarity
The message from Monaco comes as King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia respond to one of Spain's deadliest railway disasters in recent history.
The collision occurred on October 28 near Urda, in the province of Toledo, involving two high-speed trains operated by Renfe and Iryo. Emergency services were deployed to the scene as authorities worked to assist survivors and investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Spain's royal household expressed the King and Queen's deep sorrow following the tragedy, offering condolences to the victims' families and support to those injured.
King Felipe also personally contacted Emiliano García-Page, president of Castilla-La Mancha, to discuss the situation following the accident.
European royals stand with Spain
Prince Albert and Princess Charlene are not the only European royals to publicly express their solidarity.
King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands also shared a heartfelt statement through the Dutch Royal House's official Instagram account.
"Our thoughts are with those affected by the train disaster near Urda in Spain," the Dutch royal couple said in a statement translated from Dutch. They expressed sympathy for the grieving families, the injured and those awaiting news of their loved ones.
As Spain continues to mourn the victims, the personal messages from Monaco and the Netherlands reflect the support being extended to King Felipe, Queen Letizia and the Spanish people during a difficult moment.
