With her sights set on Puerto Rico, María Alejandra López, Miss Universe Colombia 2026, is preparing to write a new chapter in the history of universal beauty. Her goal is clear: she's aiming to win a third crown for her country, and expectations are sky-high as all of Colombia buzzes with excitement to see her shine on the world's most important stage, which this year celebrates its 75th anniversary with a diamond edition.

María Alejandra arrives in Puerto Rico on November 24 with a wealth of experience rooted at home. The daughter of Luz Stella Pérez, who also competed in beauty pageants in Risaralda in 1990, the 32-year-old learned to navigate the world of pageantry with discipline and admiration — a detail she shared in an interview with ¡HOLA! Américas.

On her way to Puerto Rico, Miss Universe Colombia carries lessons from the competitions she's taken part in since the age of 18. In 2021, she was the first runner-up in the national pageant in pursuit of the Miss Universe dream, and in 2023, she placed second in Miss Grand International, where she came to understand that emotion and perfectionism can coexist. Every runway walk, every interview, and every round of preparation has been a learning lab, where passion blends with the drive to give her very best.

As an industrial engineer and model, María Alejandra stands out as a candidate who represents not only Colombia's beauty but also the perseverance and spirit of a nation that dreams of being crowned among the greatest once again.

With less than a month to go until Miss Universe, how are you feeling? What does representing Colombia on such a prestigious stage mean to you?

I'm incredibly excited to have finally achieved this first milestone, bringing me one step closer to a dream I've had since I was 18 years old.

Representing Colombia is both an honor and a tremendous source of pride. I embrace this responsibility with all my heart, with love, dedication, and a genuine desire to serve. I want to represent my country in the best possible way, especially my beloved Coffee Region.

Our region experienced a devastating earthquake, and although it was an incredibly difficult time, we are rebuilding and moving forward.

That's the message I want to share with my community: We are resilient, determined women and individuals who never give up. We give everything we have to the things we love, and I'm here to represent you with all my heart.

You've become an example of perseverance, and we've watched you compete in previous pageants. How would you describe your experience at Miss Grand International, and what lessons are you bringing with you to Miss Universe?

Every pageant has taught me something valuable, and each experience has helped shape the woman I am today.

I consider myself a well-rounded woman who strives to grow in every aspect of life. I'm an industrial engineer, but I'm also passionate about art, performing on stage, and giving back to my community through social work.

I believe I've developed a holistic approach to life, preparing myself not only professionally but also emotionally and spiritually. I've worked to become someone who feels fulfilled, at peace, and comfortable in her own skin.

It's from that place of self-love and inner peace that I can give my best, represent my country, and, above all, help bring people together.

How did your dream of competing in beauty pageants and becoming part of Miss Universe history begin?

My mother was a beauty queen, so in many ways, this dream began with her. I'm continuing that legacy, but I'm also making it my own, shaping it around my personality and the woman I've become.

I've always been a very calm and grounded person, and this journey has truly helped me grow and evolve.

After everything I've experienced and accomplished throughout my career, I now see it as a legacy of my own. That's what I want to leave behind for the little girls watching me, for women across Latin America, and for people around the world.

I want them to keep believing in their dreams and to understand that even the things that seem impossible can become possible.

What is the best advice your mother has ever given you?

My mom is my number one fan, but she's also my toughest coach! She's always been very demanding because she wants me to be the best version of myself.

Ever since I was little, she taught me to pay attention to detail, to be a bit of a perfectionist, and to always give 100 percent.

But above all, she's a woman who radiates happiness and joy. One of the most important lessons she's taught me is that whenever we have the opportunity to serve others, we should do it with a smile.

That's the most beautiful advice my mom has given me.

What has been your biggest challenge as you prepare for Miss Universe in Puerto Rico?

With the experience I've gained over the years, I'm already accustomed to the hard work and discipline that come with preparing for a competition like this.

Of course, I also make rest, mental health, and physical well-being a priority. I believe emotional healing and inner work are essential because, to truly shine on stage, you first have to feel good on the inside.

It's important to have that sense of peace, balance, and fulfillment.

At this point, I would say my biggest challenge is probably time. There's so much to accomplish in such a short period, but fortunately, I have an incredible team supporting me, and everything is very well organized.

In the age of social media, how do you handle the pressure, criticism, and constant public scrutiny?

I think my harshest critic has always been myself. Over time, I've learned that the way I react to what others say often reflects how I feel about myself.

That's why I've dedicated so much time to working on my inner self and learning to become my own best friend.

Of course, I'm constantly evaluating myself and looking for ways to improve. But I've also learned to recognize that I'm always doing my best and to accept things as they unfold.

Today, I have the humility to listen to criticism, receive it with an open mind, and decide what I can learn from it.

There have been many times when someone's criticism has genuinely helped me grow. It's made me realize that, yes, there are areas where I can improve.

That's part of why we're here. Life isn't just about going out into the world and teaching others. It's also about being willing to learn from everyone around us.

Looking back at your childhood and teenage years, what experience had the greatest impact on the woman and professional you've become?

One of the most defining experiences of my life was living abroad. I spent seven years in the United States, where I attended elementary school.

I believe that experience played an important role in shaping the industrial engineer I eventually became because, from a very young age, I was extremely focused on academics.

If I tell you my story, you'll realize I wasn't your typical beauty queen growing up!

I was actually a little nerd. I was incredibly studious, always striving for academic excellence. I even attended university on a scholarship.

I believe that academic background and all those experiences have helped make me the beauty queen I am today. They've shaped my character and influenced the way I approach life.

As a little girl, I was also quite shy, introverted, and quiet. I've always had a very serene personality.

But that's what I find so beautiful about my journey. Today, I'm able to take that inner peace I've carried with me since childhood and share it with the world.

Beyond beauty pageants, what other dreams would you like to fulfill in the coming years?

I have so many dreams! Of course, right now, my biggest goal is to bring the Miss Universe crown home to my beautiful country.

"But beyond that, I dream of getting married and having children. I love the idea of having a traditional family life.

I'm also very passionate about my professional future. I want to become an entrepreneur and use my image and platform to continue inspiring people, empowering women, and making a positive impact on the world.

I see myself as someone who plants seeds of awareness, encouraging others to become more conscious, open their hearts, and grow as individuals.

I would also love to write a book about my life and share my experiences.

Above all, I want to remain authentic and honest about who I am because I truly believe that's the only way to build meaningful connections and inspire others.
