George Clooney and Amal Clooney attended the 51st Chaplin Award Gala, which honored the actor's career. The couple stepped out on Monday, April 27, at Alice Tully Hall in New York City for the annual gala hosted by the Film at Lincoln Center, where George was celebrated for his contributions to cinema.
Amal Clooney, 48, wore a purple Balenciaga peplum mini dress paired with metallic gold heels and a matching clutch, while George, 64, opted for timeless black-tie polish in a classic tuxedo. While the fashion had heads turning, George’s candid comments stole the spotlight while giving his speech. “It’s wild,” George said of the honor, calling the attention “a little embarrassing,” though he added it was also “fun.”
Clooney leaned into humor by revealing he was planning to sip to control his nerves: “You don’t, you drink,” he joked. “I’m gonna have to start drinking soon.”
For decades, Clooney has been known as a charmer, but in his latest role as a dad, the beloved actor offered a more intimate moment as a family guy. The star, who shares twins, Ella and Alexander, 8, with Amal, is slowly discovering what their father does for a living. “It’s a weird thing. As you get older, it’s hard to watch movies when you were younger because you’re like, holy s---, that doesn’t even look like me anymore,” Clooney said.
He revealed he rarely watches his older films now, but made an exception for “Fantastic Mr. Fox” to please his children. “I’m watching because I’ve got 8-year-olds, I’m watching ‘Fantastic Mr. Fox,’ which is a little easier because it’s not really me,” he explained. “And that’s kind of fun because the kids are slowly figuring out what I do for a living.”
George’s comments add to a recent string of rare insights he has shared about life at home. Earlier this year, the Oscar winner opened up about finally introducing his son Alexander to “Batman & Robin,” the superhero film in which Clooney played Batman. “Halloween’s a big holiday. My son went as Batman. He hadn’t seen Batman yet,” Clooney recalled in a previous interview. “I always say to him, ‘You know I was Batman.’ He’s always like, ‘No.’”
Then he hosted a family movie screening. “A couple of weeks ago, I finally showed it to him,” Clooney said. “It wasn’t great for grown-ups, but it’s great for 8-year-olds, so he loved it.”
While bonding with dad seems something George has mastered with his son, his daughter is giving him a tease of what the future holds.
Ella Clooney is already eye-rolling at dad George Clooney
During an appearance on the New Heights podcast with Travis and Jason Kelce, the actor said that his 8-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella, “still dig” him, though he knows that may not last much longer.
“I got 8-year-olds, and they still dig me, you know?” Clooney said. He added with a laugh, “That’s gonna change, as you know.” Jason Kelce, a dad of four, chimed in, “Teenage years are coming.”
Clooney elaborated on his daughter’s independence. “Even at [8 years old], I’ve got, like, my daughter rolling her eyes now, which is a new thing,” he explained. “Like, I’d say, like, ‘Hey, you know, your dad’s a big star,’ and she just rolls her eyes.”
The Oscar winner also shared about the day his daughter picked up one of his expletives. “I was in the car driving to school the other day, and some guy cut me off, and I was like, ‘F--king a--hole!’” he recalled. “And I’m driving, and about five minutes later, in the backseat, I hear, ‘F--king a--hole!’ from my 8-year-old. And you know they’re going to say that, and my wife’s going to hear it, and then I’m dead.”
