What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)

DiCaprio plays Johnny Depp’s little brother in this award-winning film and is a testimony to his raw talent. Gilbert Grape (Depp) is a small-town young man with a lot of responsibilities like taking care of his mother (Darlene Cates), who is eating herself to death and is so overweight that she can‘t leave the house. Then there is his mentally impaired younger brother, Arnie played by DiCaprio. He prepared for the role by visiting a home for kids with mental disabilities and studying their mannerisms.

The Beach (2000)

Directed by Danny Boyle, The Beach is an adventure drama film based on a novel that follows Richard played by DiCaprio who meets Daffy, who shares a map to a pristine, uninhabited island in the Gulf of Thailand with a beautiful hidden beach. After he meets a young French couple, Françoise and Étienne, they decide to embark on the dangerous trek and eventually find a cult-like colony run by Sal, played by Tilda Swinton. While the film received mixed to negative reviews, its fascinating to watch DiCaprio lose himself in the role. Plus there is an epic love scene between the then 25-year-old and Swinton.

The Boys Life (1993)

The Boy’s Life is considered DiCaprio’s breakout role as a boy named Toby in the 1950’s coming of age drama. The harrowing, true story follows Toby, who lives with his single mother Caroline (Ellen Barkin), and his abusive stepfather, played by Robert Dinero. As his mother refuses to give up on the abusive marriage, it intensifies, and Toby plans an escape. The complex film brought a then 18-year-old DiCaprio amazing reviews and job offers.
