Is this the first time we've seen a royal wearing blue nails? Princess Charlotte, 10, is making headlines after she was captured in a relaxed family portrait wearing nail polish. In the image released on April 29 to celebrate Prince William and Princess Kate’s 15th wedding anniversary, the British princess appears to be wearing an icy blue manicure that breaks from long-standing royal preferences.

The photo, featuring the Wales family lounging in the grass, might be hinting at how Charlotte could be part of the next generation of royals reshaping tradition, even if it is one polished fingertip at a time.

The Detail That Stole the Spotlight

Look closely at Charlotte’s hands, and you’ll notice the soft, pastel blue shade, which is noticeably different from the sheer pinks and creams typically associated with royal women.

But this isn’t her first beauty moment either. She previously wore a bubblegum pink manicure to Wimbledon, marking her first public appearance with nail polish, during the summer of 2025.

Are There Royal Nail Polish Rules?

While there’s no official rulebook banning bold nail colors in the British royal family, tradition and a strong aesthetic preference shaped largely by Queen Elizabeth II, have historically made women lean toward subtle pinks, nude tones, soft whites, or peaches.

These understated shades were chosen because they were considered elegant, timeless, and non-distracting during public engagements.

Queen Elizabeth even had a favorite nail polish. According to Allure, she famously favored Essie’s “Ballet Slippers,” which is a barely-there pink that became synonymous with royal polish.

So while Princess Charlotte does not have strict rules to follow, royal experts consistently note that while neutral nails are encouraged for formal settings, there’s no formal protocol prohibiting brighter colors.

Why Neutral Nails Became the Royal Standard

Colorful nail polish is not restricted, but royals lean to neutrals for image control, and their appearances are carefully curated. Royal etiquette traditionally leaned toward minimalism.

Still, this “rule” has softened significantly in recent years. And now royal beauty standards are evolving. Of course, neutral nails will likely remain the go-to for formal events. But whenever an icy blue manicure is appropriate, we will see Princess Charlotte shaping what modern royal style looks like.
