Infanta Sofía is taking another significant step in her growing royal role. Spain’s Royal Household has confirmed that King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia’s younger daughter will deliver her first official speech, just days after ¡HOLA! first reported the news.

The milestone marks a new chapter for the second in line to the Spanish throne, reflecting her increasingly prominent place within the monarchy and a more active presence on the royal calendar. While this will be her first official address, it won’t be the first time the public has heard her speak.

Over the years, Infanta Sofía has made several memorable appearances, from reading Don Quixote during the pandemic to sharing heartfelt moments alongside her family.

Infanta Sofía prepares to make history

On July 8, the 19-year-old royal will travel to the Monastery of Nuestra Señora de Cogullada in Zaragoza, where she will preside, for the first time, as Honorary President of Fundación Ibercaja. During the ceremony, which recognizes recipients of the foundation’s Docentes Referentes educational grants, she will deliver her first official speech.

The occasion is widely seen as a defining moment in the early stages of her public life. Rather than a one-off appearance, it signals the gradual expansion of her institutional responsibilities and the beginning of a more visible role within the Spanish royal family.

The event also reflects the confidence King Felipe and Queen Letizia have placed in their younger daughter as she gradually takes on more official duties. The timing is especially meaningful, as Sofía is also entering a new phase in her personal life.

After completing her first year studying Political Science and International Relations in Portugal, she is expected to move to Paris later this summer to continue her education.

The times we’ve already heard Infanta Sofía speak

Although Sofía’s responsibilities will never mirror those of her older sister, Princess Leonor, this latest milestone inevitably draws comparisons. Leonor delivered her first official speech at just 13 years old during the 2019 Princess of Asturias Awards, a moment that established her as one of Europe’s rising royal heirs.

Sofía’s path has been different, but she has already shown glimpses of her ease in front of the public.

The first came in 2020, when she participated in a nationwide reading of Don Quixote during the pandemic. At just 12 years old, her calm delivery introduced many Spaniards to her voice for the first time.

The public wouldn’t hear her speak again until 2023, when she joined Queen Letizia before Spain’s FIFA Women’s World Cup final victory. Speaking to RTVE, she admitted, “I’m really looking forward to the match starting,” before adding her unwavering support for the team: “Whatever happens.”

Though brief, the comments showcased her natural warmth and authenticity, qualities that have become increasingly apparent with each public appearance.

Another memorable moment came during the celebrations marking the 10th anniversary of King Felipe VI’s proclamation. Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía surprised their parents with a heartfelt speech thanking them for the example they had set throughout the King’s first decade on the throne.

Smiling beside her sister, Sofía said, “Thank you for joining us to remember that over these past 10 years we’ve learned from our parents what the commitment the four of us have to the Spanish people truly means.”

She closed the tribute with a simple but emotional, “Mom, Dad, thank you,” a moment that quickly became one of the most memorable scenes of the anniversary celebrations.

A new chapter for the young royal

When Infanta Sofía steps up to the podium on July 8, it will mark far more than her first official speech. It will also be her third solo public engagement, following her attendance at the National Heritage Photography Awards, which bear her name, and the inauguration of an ONCE center, where she charmed guests with her warm interactions, including with several guide dog puppies.

The young royal who once captivated audiences by reading a passage from Don Quixote is now preparing to address the public in one of the most significant moments of her royal life so far. It’s a milestone that signals the beginning of a new chapter, one in which Infanta Sofía is gradually carving out her own place within Spain’s monarchy.
