Over the past three years, Princess Catharina-Amalia of the Netherlands has undergone a remarkable transformation. Once seen as a reserved royal figure still finding her footing, the Dutch heir to the throne has gradually stepped into a far more confident and visible role within Europe’s new generation of future monarchs.
Since turning 18, Amalia has evolved from a princess quietly standing beside her parents into a poised heiress increasingly comfortable at the centre of royal life. At 22, she now moves through public engagements with growing assurance, whether appearing alone or alongside the rest of the Dutch Royal Family. The images of a shy and hesitant teenager have slowly faded, replaced by a young woman who appears increasingly prepared for the role awaiting her.
A hesitant beginning in the Caribbean:
Although Amalia came of age in February 2021, it was not until 2023 that she undertook her first major international tour alongside her parents, King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands. The two-week Caribbean visit marked a defining moment in her royal journey.
The tour took the family across Bonaire, Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten, Sint Eustatius and Saba, with an intense programme of around 70 engagements. It was Amalia’s first experience of royal diplomacy on such a demanding scale and, at the time, her inexperience was visible. She often remained slightly behind her parents, still adjusting to the pressure and visibility that come with life as heir to the Dutch throne.
Queen Máxima, charismatic and effortlessly warm throughout the trip, dominated many of the public moments with her energy and ease. Her lively appearances and spontaneous dancing in Curaçao and Aruba became especially memorable. Beside her, Amalia appeared more reserved, carefully observing rather than leading.
The difficult period that changed everything:
The Caribbean tour came during an especially challenging chapter in Amalia’s life. Shortly after beginning university studies in Amsterdam, serious security threats emerged amid fears she could become the target of kidnapping or attack by organised crime groups.
The situation forced the princess to leave Amsterdam and return to the protection of Huis ten Bosch Palace in The Hague, where she lived under heightened security with her family. At the time, Amalia openly admitted how difficult the experience had been, revealing that she missed the freedom and normality of student life.
It later emerged that the Princess of Orange had temporarily relocated to Madrid, where she was able to continue her studies discreetly under the protection of King Felipe VI of Spain and Queen Letizia of Spain, close friends of her parents. In her own words, Madrid allowed her to rediscover a sense of “freedom”.
The rise of a future queen:
By late 2023, signs of a more self-assured Amalia had begun to emerge. At the 18th birthday celebrations of Prince Christian of Denmark, where Europe’s young heirs gathered for a gala evening, the Dutch princess stood out with a new elegance and composure, appearing in historic jewels from the House of Orange collection.
One of her most symbolic appearances came during the Spanish state visit to the Netherlands in April 2024. Amalia attended the state banquet alongside the Spanish king and queen, dazzling in a midnight blue gown paired with the spectacular ruby peacock tiara dating from 1897, together with matching jewels.
The evening marked a clear turning point in how she was perceived publicly. No longer simply the eldest daughter of the Dutch monarchs, but a future sovereign beginning to claim her own space.
During that visit, King Willem-Alexander publicly confirmed for the first time that Amalia had indeed spent time living in Madrid while continuing her studies at the University of Amsterdam.
The “Amalia effect” takes hold:
The summer of 2024 brought another important step when Amalia joined her parents at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris to support Dutch athletes. She appeared notably more relaxed and spontaneous, celebrating victories with genuine enthusiasm and sharing moments in the stands with King Felipe VI during one of the Games’ most emotional finals.
By then, it was evident that public life no longer intimidated her. Instead, she projected warmth, ease, and increasing confidence.
In September 2024, Amalia attended a dinner with members of the Council of State wearing the historic diamond necklace of the Queens of Orange, presenting a noticeably more mature image.
Further high-profile appearances followed, including commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz and a NATO leaders’ reception alongside her parents, where she greeted Donald Trump.
A modern royal finding her place:
Over the past year, Amalia has balanced university studies with a growing international schedule. She travelled to New York with Queen Máxima for a summit where she met Bill Gates and later attended ceremonies surrounding the Luxembourg succession, where her polished curtsies and calm public presence attracted widespread praise.
Like several other future European queens, including Princess Leonor of Spain, Amalia has also undertaken military training as part of her preparation for royal duty.
One of her most recent appearances revealed perhaps the clearest sign yet of her evolution. During a visit exploring both the daytime and nightlife culture of Amsterdam, the princess appeared remarkably comfortable, approachable and fully at ease in her role.
The celebrations surrounding King’s Day in April reinforced what many royal observers have already begun to describe as the “Amalia effect”. At a time when public confidence in the Dutch monarchy had weakened following criticism of the royal family’s holiday to Greece during pandemic restrictions, the Princess of Orange has brought renewed freshness and relatability to the institution.
Amalia is no longer simply the eldest daughter of the Dutch king and queen. She is increasingly seen as a future monarch stepping confidently into the spotlight with a distinct identity of her own.
