King Charles and Queen Camilla's State Visit to the US is one of the biggest efforts of international collaboration since the start of their reign. The meetings with Donald and Melania Trump, the white-tie White House dinner, and Charles's address to Congress recall Queen Elizabeth's key state visits — a heritage that Queen Camilla has tried to keep alive through her jewelry. As the state visit continues to New York, Queen Camilla has had some notable encounters with various prominent figures.
The King and Queen take Manhattan
Following a busy agenda in Washington D.C., Charles and Camilla are now in New York for one of the most symbolic parts of their trip, including a visit from Queen Camilla to an event linked to British literature. There, she visited the New York Public Library, where she encountered two major American figures in literature and publishing: Sarah Jessica Parker and Anna Wintour.
She also paid a visit to a Winnie the Pooh stuffy, whom the President of the library described as “the world’s most famous teddy bear," as reported by the New York Times. The adorable bear and his friends, created by A.A. Milne, are British icons and some of the most famous literary figures in history.
“I’m hoping my voice isn’t going to conk out before the end of this speech,” said Camilla at the event. “As you can imagine, I have been talking quite a lot over the past few days."
A stop by the 9/11 memorial
King Charles and Queen Camilla kicked off their visit to the city by attending a ceremony with British and American veterans and visiting the 9/11 Memorial. The two then met with various survivors of the tragedy, hearing their firsthand accounts, all building up to a speech from the King. In his address, Charles underlined the bonds that unite the UK and the US, tracing them from World War II to the present day.
Their trip has been extended to May 2nd, with the King having a visit scheduled to the state of Virginia. He'll then visit the Bermudas, marking his first visit to the British overseas territory.
Camilla's homages to the late Queen
Throughout the US state visit, Camilla has worn several pieces that reference the history of the British Crown. Among the highlights are the Kent Amethyst Parure, a storied piece that originally belonged to Queen Victoria's mother, the Duchess of Kent. She wore them for the White House dinner, pairing them with a bold pink dress.
Camilla was also seen wearing a brooch steeped in her country's history. Known as the Brooch of Britannia, the diamond piece features the colors of the UK flag and was often worn by Queen Elizabeth. Camilla first wore it on April 29th, 2024.
