Carys Douglas is carving out her lane in the entertainment world, and while she is the daughter of Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas, she is ensuring she is making everything by herself.
The 23-year-old artist has landed a major role behind the scenes, debuting as a co-producer of an Off-Broadway play just months after graduating from Brown University.
Fresh out of college, Carys is using everything she learned about storytelling and collaboration in her favor. Douglas took to social media to reveal her latest venture by issuing an open casting call.
She is not looking for actors, but for an original script that will be brought to life on stage this summer. “The selected play will be performed in a rehearsal space at one of Off-Broadway’s leading theater houses,” she shared. Her post suggests that submissions close on May 14, with rehearsals scheduled to begin shortly after.
A New Generation of Theater Talent
Carys could be trying her luck in Hollywood, but instead, she is staying in New York City to collaborate with her friend Teniayo-Ola Macaulay, whom she met during her time studying film and international relations at Brown. The New York experimental theater scene will witness a new generation of talent. “I grew up doing theatre, and I didn’t study acting in school, but that’s why I’m happy to be in such an informative arts space,” Carys said in an interview with People magazine.
Following in Iconic Footsteps
The move is a natural evolution for Carys, given her family background. Many people don’t know that both of Cary’s parents built their careers in theater before achieving global fame in film.
Catherine Zeta-Jones was cast in the original West End production of “Annie” at just nine years old. Meanwhile, Michael Douglas honed his craft at The American Place Theatre and launched his early career at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center during the 1960s.
Despite their success, the couple has been candid about the realities of the industry. “Michael and I would be the first parents to say, ‘You know, maybe you should think of another career,’” Catherine admitted in a past interview. “But we’ve seen how passionate they are about the craft.”
She added, “They know what celebritydom is. They know the good, the bad, warts and all… but their passion is about acting as a craft.”
Carys’ brother, Dylan Douglas, is also forging his own path. The 25-year-old hosts a Gen Z-focused political radio show, “Young American with Dylan Douglas,” and recently made his film debut in “I Will Come to You.”
