Marcello Hernández had one very special person by his side at the 2026 Emmy Awards. The Saturday Night Live star brought his Cuban mom, Isabel, as his date to television's biggest night.
For those who follow Hernández's stand-up, you know he has never been shy about talking about how much his comedy comes from his family - especially his mom.
When USA Today asked who he brought to the Emmys, Hernández immediately turned the question into a joke. “Who’s my date? Don’t you know my date? You don’t know who this is?” he joked. “Oh buddy, oh buddy, you have a lot to learn. No, I’m kidding. It’s my mom, bro.”
Then he introduced her in true Marcello fashion. “It’s the legend, my mom, mi progenitor.” His mom was clearly just as excited to be there, telling USA Today that watching her son's career take off has been “great” and “amazing.”
“As a mother, you know, you want to see your kids strive and do great, and he’s a very hard-working kid, so I’m very proud,” she said. He's brought her on the red carpet in the past, usually alternating between her and his girlfriend, Ana Amelia Batlle Cabral.
When she was asked how she puts up with his chaos, she had the perfect response. "No choice. He makes me laugh. He’s always in a good mood.”
That relationship has been a major part of Hernández's comedy long before he arrived at the Emmys. In a previous interview with USA Today, the comedian called his mom his “muse” and said he tries to have her in his life “as much as possible.”
Isabel has even become part of the SNL universe, inspiring his popular “Protective Mom” sketches.
Her own story is part of what makes their relationship so important to him. She left Cuba as a child, eventually made her way to the United States, and worked her way through college. She graduated while pregnant with Hernández, something he has spoken about with enormous admiration.
Isabel got to watch him take the stage to present an award for the first time, where he used his moment in the spotlight to say hello to Harrison Ford and invite him to dinner.
He also greeted Zendaya, inviting her "and Spider-Man" to join him for dinner before saying hello to Oscar Isaac and joking that they could be cousins. He wrapped up his star-studded shout-outs by saying hello to Matthew McConaughey.
