Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner's ambitious plans to transform a remote Albanian island into an ultra-luxury destination are facing growing backlash as environmental groups, local residents, and activists raise concerns about the massive development project.

The proposed multi-billion-dollar resort would be built on Sazan Island, a former military outpost in the Adriatic Sea that has long remained largely untouched.

While the development is being promoted as a landmark investment that could elevate Albania's tourism industry, critics argue the project threatens protected ecosystems and raises serious questions about transparency.

Environmental concerns fuel opposition:

One of the biggest sources of controversy surrounds the project's potential impact on environmentally sensitive areas.

The planned developments overlap with the Karaburun-Sazan marine national park and the Vjosa-Narta protected wetlands, regions known for their rich biodiversity and importance to migratory bird populations.

Environmental organizations have warned that large-scale construction could permanently damage fragile habitats, including areas frequented by pink flamingos and other protected species.

Tens of thousands of protesters have voiced opposition to the project, arguing that the ecological cost could outweigh any economic benefits.

Reports indicate that heavy machinery has already begun clearing sections of pine forest, while fencing has restricted public access to some coastal areas, further intensifying local concerns.

Critics question government support:

The project has also sparked political controversy. Opponents accuse the Albanian government of fast-tracking approvals for foreign investors without conducting sufficient public consultations or environmental reviews.

Additional criticism emerged after Ivanka Trump reportedly described Sazan Island as a "private island" she and Kushner had discovered, despite the island being sovereign Albanian territory.

The comment triggered backlash among some locals who viewed the characterization as dismissive of the island's national significance.

Critics have further questioned whether the involvement of high-profile American political figures helped accelerate the approval process.

Why Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump want the project:

Despite the controversy, Kushner and Trump have been open about their enthusiasm for the development.

The couple has described Sazan Island's untouched landscape as a rare opportunity to create a world-class luxury destination in the Mediterranean.

Located roughly 60 miles from Italy, the island offers a combination of isolation, natural beauty, and strategic location that developers believe could attract wealthy international travelers.

The project is being pursued through Kushner's investment firm, Affinity Partners, which manages billions of dollars in private equity capital, including investments backed by Middle Eastern sovereign wealth funds. The financial incentives are also significant.

Under agreements with Albania, the development reportedly benefits from tax advantages that could exempt the project from taxation during much of the construction phase, enhancing its long-term profitability.

Why Albania is backing the resort:

For Albania, the project represents far more than a luxury resort.

Prime Minister Edi Rama has promoted the development as part of a broader strategy to reposition Albania as a high-end tourism destination capable of competing with established Mediterranean hotspots.

Government officials argue that attracting affluent travelers, luxury yachts, and major foreign investment could generate substantially more revenue than traditional low-cost tourism.

Supporters of the project also point to promises of job creation, infrastructure improvements, and the revitalization of former Cold War-era military sites.

Beyond economics, the development carries symbolic significance. By attracting internationally known investors, Albania hopes to showcase its modernization efforts and strengthen its image as a country aligned with Western investment and European integration as it continues pursuing membership in the European Union.

For now, however, the future of the project remains uncertain as environmental concerns, political criticism, and the ongoing anti-corruption investigation continue to place the development under intense scrutiny.
