Shakira is grateful for all of the experiences she's had, even the painful ones. It's been four years since her notorious split from Gerard Piqué, the father of her sons, Sasha and Milan. Shakira took refuge in her music after the dissolution of her marriage, releasing her most famous record yet, "Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran," and reaching new heights in her already towering career. As she prepares for a 2026 World Cup performance that cements her reign as the queen of the sporting event, Shakira has shared some loving words for her former partner.
In an interview with The Times, Shakira recognized the impact that meeting Piqué had on her life. "I will always have that gratitude in my heart for the father of my kids and [for] turning me into the mother that I am today,” she said.
The statements reveal that time has done its job, healing a relationship that caused them both a lot of harm. Shakira referred to the end of that relationship as her “darkest moment," and shared how challenging it was to let go of that dream. “I saw the dissolution of my family, the family that I had dreamt to keep forever,” she continued.
“I’ve been through so much pain, but it has made me perhaps in an unforeseen way a wiser person — or stronger, at least.”
“They say that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger and it is true. It’s amazing to learn that humans have a resilience that we can resort to at any moment in our lives. Sometimes through hardships and through pain is how we discover how strong we can be. Suffering sometimes makes you a better person, makes you value friends and support.”
At the time, Shakira was also dealing with other issues, including the health of her father, William Mebarak, and her accusations of tax fraud charges from the Spanish government, an issue that was resolved positively for her earlier this month.
“Life sometimes can be a bitch, but it’s also beautiful and made of light and shadows,” Shakira said. “I thank life for every single moment, the bright ones and the dark ones, the people who have made me suffer because they have become my masters who have taught me lessons, very valuable lessons.”
Shakira's too busy for romance
Throughout the interview, Shakira also opened up about her love life. Since her split from Piqué, she's been linked to different men, among them Lucien Laviscount and Lewis Hamilton, with these rumors never being confirmed.
“Oh no, no romance for me for now,” she said. “There’s no space or time in my life for that. My plate is quite full. My kids are my priority, and my career. Strangely enough, I’m in love with my career like I’ve never been in my life. I’m enjoying my time alone as well.”
