The basketball world is mourning the loss of Brandon Clarke after the Memphis Grizzlies forward died at age 29. Clarke’s death was announced by the Grizzlies and his agency, Priority Sports, and as of this writing, no cause of death has been released.
While fans wait for details, the Grizzlies shared an emotional statement honoring one of their longest-tenured players. “We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Clarke”, the organization said. “Brandon was an outstanding teammate and an even better person whose impact on the organization and the greater Memphis community will not be forgotten.”
© Getty ImagesPriority Sports also paid tribute to Clarke, calling the loss devastating. “It is just impossible to put into words how much he’ll be missed,” the agency said in a statement.
The National Basketball Association released its own message following the announcement. “As one of the longest-tenured members of the Grizzlies, Brandon was a beloved teammate and leader who played the game with enormous passion and grit,” the NBA said. “Our thoughts and sympathies are with Brandon’s family, friends and the Grizzlies organization.”
© Getty ImagesClarke spent his entire NBA career in Memphis after initially being selected in the first round of the 2019 NBA Draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder. He was traded to Memphis just weeks later.
During the pandemic-shortened 2019-20 season, Clarke averaged 12.1 points and 5.9 rebounds across 58 games, earning NBA All-Rookie Team honors and finishing fourth in Rookie of the Year voting.
He was known for his relentless effort and defensive versatility. Clarke primarily thrived in a sixth-man role during the early years of his career. In October 2022, he signed a four-year, $52 million contract extension with the Grizzlies.
© Getty ImagesHis career later became defined by perseverance through injuries. Clarke suffered a torn Achilles tendon in March 2023, an injury that sidelined him for the remainder of the season.
He returned to appear in 64 games during the 2024-25 campaign, but ongoing calf and knee injuries restricted him to just two games this season.
Before the NBA
Before reaching the NBA, Clarke built an impressive college basketball career that started at San Jose State University and ended with a standout season at Gonzaga University in 2018-19.
During his lone season at Gonzaga, Clarke averaged 16.9 points per game and helped lead the Bulldogs to the NCAA Tournament regional final. He earned Wooden All-America honors and established himself as one of the top frontcourt players in college basketball.
