While there is always room for improvement, Hollywood has slowly started to embrace diversity and representation over the years. We can thank stars like Rita Moreno, who became the first Latin American woman to win an Academy Award. There have been many actresses who have broken barriers, and have helped open doors by showing the industry that Latin Americans can play any role. While its taken decades to get here, check out five Latinas that have helped break barriers in Hollywood.

With her upcoming role in “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” Anya Taylor-Joy completely transforms. Including a Latina actress in the Mad Max franchise showcases her unique talent and highlights the recognition of Latina talent as Hollywood leads. The actress with Argentine ancestry, who grew up in Argentina, even spoke in Spanish during promo.

Jenna Ortega

Jenna Ortega captivated the world with her portrayal as “Wednesday”, from the Adam Family franchise. The actress with Mexican and Puerto Rican roots marked the first time that the moody character was played by a Latina character. It also launched Ortega’s career to new heights.

Rosario Dawson

Rosario Dawson entered the Star Wars universe as Jedi Ashoka Tano. She became the first Afro Latina Jedi, bringing her authenticity and talents to The Mandalorian. Together with Chilean-born actor Pedro Pascal, they brought Latino pride to the franchise.

Rachel Zegler

Rachel Zegler’s casting in “The Hunger Games,” explored a fresh chapter for the dystopian franchise. The actress, with Colombian ancestry, has continued to break boundaries, starring as Snow White.

Xochitl Gomez

Xochitl Gomez’s beloved character as America Chavez in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” made a historical mark in the Marvel franchise by being the first Latina superhero. Her groundbreaking role not only shattered barriers but opened the door for more representation of Latinas in a superhero narrative.
