Prince George is settling into his teenage years. The eldest child of Prince William and Kate Middleton is currently on his first break from Eton College. On one of his first outings captured by cameras, George was spotted with Prince William at a soccer match, wearing a cool tracksuit.
The two were photographed at a soccer match in Barcelona, where they were watching their favorite team play: Aston Villa. Their team was playing in the UEFA Champions League and lost to Barcelona F.C. 3-0. Tough.
But the most striking part was Prince George's outfit. He normally wears suits and formal attire; on this occasion, he wore a black track jacket with Aston Villa's club logo printed on the front.
He looked disappointed as he watched his team lose and was seated next to his dad, who looked equally glum.
Their attendance at the game was confirmed by Barcelona, who shared a photo of Prince William in the stadium.
“FC Barcelona is honoured to welcome His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales and His Royal Highness Prince George to the Spotify Camp Nou," reads the caption. “Thank you for joining us for a special evening of Champions League football featuring your beloved Aston Villa.”
Prince George and Prince William's love of Aston Villa
Prince George has been a long-time fan of Aston Villa. It's something he inherited from his dad, who has been one of the team's most notorious followers for decades.
“All my friends at school were either Man United fans or Chelsea fans, and I didn’t want to follow the run-of-the-mill teams,” William explained in an interview with the BBC. “I wanted to have a team that was more mid-table that could give me more emotional rollercoaster moments.”
Aston Villa is an old club, but it isn't as large as some of the English league's major teams, which often have international fanbases. It has a very devoted fanbase, with the majority of its fans based in the UK.
“Aston Villa’s always had a great history. I have got friends of mine who support Aston Villa, and one of the first FA Cup games I went to was Bolton v Aston Villa back in 2000... It was fantastic; I sat with all the fans with my red beanie on, and I was sat with all the Brummie fans and had a great time. It was the atmosphere, the camaraderie, and I really felt that there was something I could connect with.”
Prince William has shared that George is "part of the pride" and that all of his kids have been a part of his superstitions when it comes to his favorite club's performance.
