Kim Kardashian is facing a deeply personal health scare, and the timing has brought her family's painful history with esophageal cancer back into focus.
The 46-year-old reality star and SKIMS founder recently revealed that she underwent an endoscopy after doctors discovered inflammation and irregularities in her esophagus. What began as concerns about throat pain has become an emotional medical journey, particularly because her father, Robert Kardashian Sr., died of esophageal cancer in 2003 at age 59.
During the November 5 episode of Hulu's The Kardashians, Kim returned for another examination to determine whether medication had improved her condition or whether she would need a procedure to remove abnormal tissue.
But one detail makes her experience especially poignant: Kardashian sought treatment at a medical center she and her sisters helped establish in their father's honor.
Why Kim Kardashian Underwent an Endoscopy
Kardashian first discussed her diagnosis during the October 29 episode of The Kardashians, explaining that she had been experiencing persistent throat discomfort while balancing her demanding professional schedule. “I’ve been feeling a little off lately,” she admitted, adding that her throat was “killing me.”
After reviewing medical images, her doctor identified inflammation in her esophagus and suspected esophagitis, a condition involving irritation and swelling of the esophageal lining.
The physician recommended medication and further examination to determine whether additional treatment was necessary. For Kardashian, however, the diagnosis immediately raised concerns that went beyond the physical symptoms.
She acknowledged that she had kept the issue relatively private because it reminded her of losing her father to cancer. Her hope was that medication would resolve the inflammation without requiring surgery, although she admitted she was uncertain about the outcome.
Kim Kardashian’s Endoscopy at the UCLA Center Named After Her Father
Perhaps the most unexpected part of Kardashian's medical journey is where she chose to receive additional care.
In 2019, Kim, Kourtney and Khloé Kardashian partnered with UCLA Health to help establish the Robert G. Kardashian Center for Esophageal Health, honoring their father's memory while supporting specialized treatment and research.
Years later, Kim found herself seeking care at the same facility.
According to PEOPLE's November 5 report, Kardashian had undergone an initial endoscopy that revealed irregularities in her esophagus. One doctor recommended removing the affected tissue, but she decided to seek a second opinion at the UCLA center.
A specialist recommended trying medication for eight weeks before repeating the endoscopy to evaluate whether the inflammation and irregularities had improved. The situation carried a striking irony. A medical center created to honor her father was now helping Kardashian navigate her own esophageal health concerns.
Kim Kardashian Opens Up About Her Fear of Esophagus Surgery
Despite her concerns, Kardashian approached the follow-up endoscopy with cautious optimism. She explained that doctors would determine whether the medication had worked or whether she needed a portion of her esophagus removed. “Obviously, I don't want surgery,” she said, while making it clear she would follow the treatment her doctors considered necessary.
Kardashian also described the original recommendation for surgery as frightening, prompting her to pursue a less invasive approach before making a final decision. The second specialist's recommendation offered another possibility: medication might reduce the inflammation enough to avoid removing tissue.
The November 5 episode did not publicly establish the final outcome of her follow-up endoscopy. A preview for the next installment, however, indicated that further treatment could be necessary.
Kris Jenner Admits She Is Scared About Kim Kardashian's Diagnosis
Kardashian wasn't the only family member struggling with the uncertainty. Her mother, Kris Jenner, accompanied her to the UCLA medical center and admitted that the experience was particularly distressing because of Robert Kardashian's death.
Robert reportedly died just eight weeks after receiving his esophageal cancer diagnosis, making the family's memories especially painful. “So of course I'm scared,” Jenner acknowledged.
The 70-year-old momager also revealed that she was trying not to communicate the full extent of her fears to Kim, preferring to remain supportive as they waited for medical answers.
What Is Esophagitis, the Condition Kim Kardashian Was Diagnosed With?
Esophagitis is inflammation of the esophagus, the muscular tube that transports food and liquids from the mouth to the stomach. According to the Mayo Clinic, the condition can cause painful swallowing, difficulty swallowing, heartburn, and chest discomfort.
Potential causes include acid reflux, certain medications, infections, and allergic inflammation. One common cause is gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, which occurs when stomach acid repeatedly flows backward into the esophagus. Although many cases respond to medication and other treatments, persistent inflammation can sometimes lead to complications.
Importantly, esophagitis is not the same diagnosis as esophageal cancer. Certain conditions associated with long-term reflux, including Barrett's esophagus, can increase cancer risk, but Kardashian has not publicly confirmed having Barrett's esophagus or cancer.
