Queen Mathilde brought a bright burst of color to Laeken Castle on October 6, choosing an orange dress with a detail that made the look especially memorable.
An oversized bow at her shoulder gave the otherwise streamlined design a playful flourish as she joined King Philippe to welcome Belgian sporting stars.
The reception in Brussels recognized athletes who had distinguished themselves over the past two years, bringing together European and world championship medalists and competitors celebrated for exceptional performances on the international stage.
For the occasion, Mathilde chose a fitted dress with three-quarter sleeves, a defined waist and a hem falling just below her knees. Its clean lines allowed the vibrant shade to take center stage, while the sculptural bow added volume at one side of the neckline.
The detail offered a softer, more expressive finish to the classic silhouette without requiring a busy print or elaborate embellishment.
Her accessories struck a quieter note. The queen paired the dress with neutral pointed-toe pumps and a small, structured handbag with a top handle and gold-tone clasp. Their muted shades balanced the orange, offering an easy styling idea for anyone drawn to bold color but unsure how to accessorize it.
Mathilde also wore statement earrings combining orange accents with dangling gold-tone elements, subtly connecting her jewelry to the dress. Bracelets added another touch of shine.
Her beauty look complemented the outfit’s polished feel. The queen’s short blonde hair was swept back from her face with volume at the crown and softly curled ends. Rosy cheeks and a pink lip completed the look, keeping the focus on her expressive smile and colorful ensemble.
Philippe stood beside her in a navy double-breasted suit with gold-tone buttons, a patterned tie and a white pocket square. The couple were photographed holding hands as they walked down the castle’s marble staircase, before posing with their guests for a group portrait.
According to the Belgian Royal Palace’s social media post, around 70 athletes attended the reception, along with members of their support teams.
The invitees included medalists from European and world championships in Olympic and Paralympic disciplines, as well as athletes whose other remarkable achievements earned them recognition.
Photographs shared by the palace also showed Mathilde smiling and chatting with guests, several of whom wore their medals. Those exchanges gave the formal setting a relaxed warmth as the king and queen celebrated the accomplishments of Belgium’s sporting community.
