King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia and Queen Sofía head to Oslo for King Harald V's funeral

King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia and Queen Sofía stood alongside Norway's royal family as the country lays King Harald V to rest. It's a trip that put three generations of the Spanish Crown in the same room on a day defined by grief and transition.

Harald died on August 28 at the age of 89, closing a 35-year reign that made him Europe's longest-reigning monarch. The throne passed automatically to his son, King Haakon VIII, who swore his constitutional oath before Norway's parliament on September 1. Barely two weeks after his father's death, the new king faced one of the heaviest days of this transition: burying his father while stepping fully into the role himself.

Spain's delegation was headed by Felipe and Letizia, with Queen Sofía traveling alongside them. Her presence carries its own weight — a reminder of the generation of European sovereigns who shared the stage with Harald for decades, and of just how tightly interwoven Europe's royal houses have become. 

Royal watchers are already drawing comparisons to other major farewells that brought the Spanish royals and Sofía together on foreign soil, among them the funeral of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II in London.

A gathering of Europe's monarchy

Harald's funeral was one of the biggest fixtures on the European royal calendar this year, with the guest list reading like a continental summit: Denmark's King Frederik X and Queen Mary, the Netherlands' King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima, and Belgium's King Philippe and Queen Mathilde. 

Sweden sent a particularly large contingent, with King Carl Gustaf, Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Daniel, Prince Carl Philip, Princess Sofia and more. Japan's Emperor Naruhito, who attended the funeral of Harald's father, King Olav V, back in 1991, was represented by Crown Prince Fumihito and Crown Princess Kiko. Monaco's Prince Albert is also expected.

The day gave Felipe VI his first face-to-face moment with Haakon VIII since the new king's accession. The two men have maintained a close friendship over the years, with Spain's royal household having already sent its condolences.

More details about the King's funeral

The service was hosted at Oslo Cathedral. Harald's coffin was carried from the Royal Palace in a ceremonial procession along Karl Johans gate, turning onto Kirkegata en route to the cathedral, escorted by members of the royal family and representatives of Norway's institutions. 

After the cathedral service, a second, smaller procession carried the coffin to Akershus Fortress, where a private ceremony followed. Harald was buried in the crypt of the royal mausoleum, alongside other members of his family — including his parents, King Olav V and Princess Märtha, and his grandparents, Haakon VII and Maud.

Afterward, in one of the day's most emotional moments, Haakon VIII and his family stepped out onto the balcony of the Royal Palace to greet the citizens who had spent the past two weeks mourning Harald, a king who led them for more than three decades.
