King Felipe, Queen Letizia and Queen Sofía arrive in Oslo for King Harald’s funeral as special family bond comes into focus

Oslo has become the centre of the royal world as monarchs, heads of state and dignitaries from across the globe arrive in Norway to bid a final farewell to King Harald V, who reigned for nearly four decades.

A steady stream of royal delegations has been arriving in the Norwegian capital ahead of the historic state funeral, with King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia among the latest European royals to touch down. The Spanish King and Queen arrived shortly after 5.30pm, while Queen Sofía has also travelled to Norway for the solemn occasion.

Their presence carries particular significance. The relationship between the Spanish and Norwegian royal families extends far beyond official duties and royal protocol, with decades of friendship and close personal ties connecting the two dynasties.

Oslo Airport is welcoming some of the world's most prominent leaders and representatives from Europe's reigning royal houses ahead of the funeral. Norwegian authorities have mounted an unprecedented security operation as the country prepares to say goodbye to King Harald, who died on August 28.

King Felipe and Queen Letizia departed Madrid shortly after 3pm and arrived in Oslo approximately two hours later. Following their arrival, the royal couple boarded transportation taking guests to Oslo's Grand Hotel, where many of the foreign royals attending the funeral are staying.

Queen Sofía is also in Norway for the farewell, making the occasion particularly poignant for the Spanish royal family.

The state funeral will take place on September 9 and will honour the life and reign of the late Norwegian monarch. Beyond its historic significance, the ceremony will bring together generations of European royalty, many of whom shared longstanding personal relationships with King Harald.

The Spanish royals' presence in Oslo highlights a relationship between the two families that has been cultivated over decades.

King Harald shared a particularly close friendship with King Juan Carlos I. Their relationship was built not only through their positions as European monarchs, but through years of personal friendship and mutual affection.

That bond has continued into the next generation. King Felipe has maintained close ties with the Norwegian royal family and holds a particularly meaningful connection to Princess Ingrid Alexandra: the Spanish monarch is one of her godparents.

Now heir to the Norwegian throne, Ingrid Alexandra represents a new generation of a royal family that has long shared important milestones with Spain's Bourbons.

King Harald and King Felipe were also seen together on numerous occasions over the years, including in Palma de Mallorca in August 2019, when the Norwegian monarch joined Felipe at the prize-giving ceremony for the 38th Copa del Rey Mapfre sailing regatta.
