When Queen Letizia wants to make a statement, she usually saves it for a special occasion. She did it again on Thursday, at the 75th edition of the Premio Planeta de Novela, in Barcelona. Presiding over the evening alongside King Felipe VI, she skipped the showstopping heirlooms of Spain’s royal collection and opted for something more personal: a slender bracelet she wore during one of the most important moments of her life.
The bracelet is a fine strand of diamonds set in platinum, and isn’t a new element for royal watchers. But Letizia doesn’t wear it casually. It has been a part of her private collection since before her wedding to Felipe. It has over two decades of history.
A bracelet that predates the crown
The bracelet’s public story begins in Copenhagen in May 2004. Letizia, still Felipe’s fiancée, wore it to the dinner held on the eve of then-Crown Prince Frederik and Mary Donaldson’s wedding. That night amounted to her formal debut before Europe’s royal houses.
Days later, she wore it to an even more meaningful occasion: the gala dinner on the eve of her own wedding, held at Madrid’s El Pardo Palace on May 21, 2004. She and Felipe married the next day at the Almudena Cathedral. Those two appearances made it one of the most sentimental and symbolic pieces in her collection.
The bracelet reappeared soon after the wedding, worn at her first gala dinner at Madrid’s Royal Palace as Princess of Asturias. That night was a state banquet in honor of the president of Peru, and she paired the bracelet with the Prussian tiara she had worn on her wedding day.
In 2005, she wore it again to a dinner honoring the president of the Czech Republic.
Literature, journalism and the royal vault
Thursday’s choice fits a pattern. In recent years, cultural awards have become the backbone of Letizia’s most high-profile engagements. These are the nights when she wears her boldest jewelry, including some of the most valuable pieces in the royal collection.
The Planeta has long been one of her favorite stages. At the 2024 ceremony, she wore diamond earrings from the joyas de pasar, the jewels Queen Victoria Eugenia left to be handed down from one queen of Spain to the next. She paired them with a white-gold-and-diamond Cartier cuff inspired by Greek columns, reportedly a gift from Queen Sofía.
Events tied to Spain’s press have prompted equally historic choices. In May 2026, at El País’s 50th-anniversary celebration in Barcelona, she wore Victoria Eugenia’s spectacular chaton necklace for the first time in Catalonia. She brings that piece out only rarely.
The best-known examples are Emperor Naruhito’s enthronement in Tokyo in 2019 and her celebrated portrait by Annie Leibovitz. At ABC’s journalism awards in July 2025, she wore the imposing 37-pearl necklace from the same historic collection. King Alfonso XII originally gave those pearls to his first wife, Queen María de las Mercedes, in 1878.
Next to those treasures, the platinum bracelet is modest in dynastic terms, and that’s exactly the point. Choosing it for the Planeta’s 75th anniversary was a nostalgic nod from a queen who has made a habit of blending her personal passions with the pageantry and institutional weight of her role. She honored the world of culture with a piece that tells her own story rather than the crown’s.
