King Charles III and Queen Camilla’s arrival in the United States unfolded with careful symbolism, quiet ceremony, and moments that highlighted both history and personal connection.

Their aircraft touched down in the afternoon at Joint Base Andrews, where preparations had already transformed the airfield into a formal welcoming scene.

A military honor guard stood in formation, while a band waited nearby, ready to perform. As the plane taxied and came to a stop, a red carpet was rolled into place at the foot of the stairs, setting the tone for the beginning of a high-profile state visit tied to America’s 250th anniversary.

When the doors opened, King Charles III and Queen Camilla appeared and began their descent side by side. The King, dressed in a navy suit, moved steadily down the steps, while the Queen followed in a soft pink ensemble that carried added meaning. Her outfit was complemented by a brooch combining the Union Jack and Stars and Stripes, a historic piece once given to Queen Elizabeth II during her first U.S. state visit in 1957.

Waiting on the tarmac was Monica Crowley, alongside Sir Christian Turner and a group of senior American and British officials. The greetings were formal but warm, marking the start of a visit designed to emphasize long-standing ties between the two nations.

The ceremonial elements followed quickly. A U.S. military band played both national anthems as the King and Queen stood facing the honor guard. Moments later, the tone softened when they stepped forward to meet children from British military families based in the United States. The children presented bouquets, adding a personal and human touch to the otherwise structured welcoming.

“We are delighted to welcome Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla to the United States as we honor our enduring and instrumental diplomatic partnership on the occasion of America's 250th birthday,” Crowley said in a statement. “Every aspect of the White House program has been thoughtfully designed by President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump to celebrate our rich shared history — and to look forward to the next 250 years of the special relationship.”

That sense of continuity was echoed even before the arrival. Turner had pointed to the broader meaning behind the visit, saying, “For us, the real purpose of the visit is its ability to recognize and celebrate, that our partnership ranges well beyond the government of the day. It's about the cultural, historical, economic, people to people links that really bind our two countries together.”

After completing the welcoming line and passing the honor guard, the royal couple departed the base, beginning the next phase of their schedule. Their first stop would take them to the White House, where Donald Trump and Melania Trump were set to host them for a private tea, followed by a series of events in Washington, D.C.

The arrival itself, though brief, carried layers of meaning. It marked the first state visit of Trump’s current term, the first by a British monarch to the U.S. in nearly two decades, and the beginning of a four-day tour that will extend beyond the capital to New York City and Virginia.
