Moon Rituals: Transform your life and align with lunar cycles

Learn easy moon rituals to manifest intentions and release stress

We live in a world where constant movement and productivity is often prioritized, so it is no surprise that many people are looking for practices that offer space to pause, reflect and reconnect with themselves.

Moon rituals are rooted in ancient traditions and they offer a powerful rhythm to follow by doing just that, slowing down. Working with this energy can really help us get to know ourselves better and align with our purpose and intentions.

How the moon affects our life and energy

The moon is connected to many cycles and its predictable pattern reminds us that life itself is cyclical. Considering how much control the moon has over nature, it makes sense l that it would have an effect on us too, although some people are sceptical about practices centred around the moon.

The moon controls the tides and since we're approximately 60% water, it is logical that it can influence us as well. The moon influences our bodies, notably with our circadian rhythms and menstrual cycles. The moon even determines when Easter falls, on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring equinox. Some farmers follow the lunar cycle, as the moon's pull influences the moisture of the soil.

Why we feel different around the full moon

Do you feel shifts around a full moon?

Feeling the Moon’s Effects: Some report having interrupted sleep, heightened emotions and a real change in energy around this time.

We have all heard of the word lunatic but you might not know that it comes from the Latin lunaticus, which means “moonstruck” or “of the moon.”

It reflects the belief that has been held for centuries, that the full moon can cause erratic behaviour.

New Moon and Full Moon Rituals

The moon’s cycles mirror the rhythms of life; growth, reflection and release and with this we are given two opportunities each month: one to set our intentions and focus on what we want to achieve before the next new moon, and one to let go of what no longer serves us.

  • New Moon Rituals: During the new moon, consider what you want to manifest. Because we can’t see the moon yet, this symbolizes planting something. Over the next two weeks, as the moon gradually lights up, it represents how your intentions can similarly manifest.
  • Full Moon Rituals: During the full moon, focus on releasing what no longer serves you. Watching the moon start to wane symbolizes shedding, simplifying, and letting go.

Marking or celebrating the moon is increasingly popular. These practices offer regular check-ins and keep you accountable, present, and dedicated.

How to do a simple moon ritual

Rituals are personal and they can be done in whatever way feels right for you. For those starting out they might want to be guided. There are moon meditations on Insight Timer every cycle that often include a visualisation to help you connect with the energy. Or you can create your own ritual.

During a New Moon:

  • Find Peace: Sit in silence, or with soft music
  • Focus: Set intentions and what you want to call in during the new moon
  • Write: Note down your intentions, titling it 'With this new moon, I am going to call in…' and keep them somewhere safe.

During a Full Moon:

  • Focus: Release what is no longer serving you
  • Visualize: Really think about what you want to let go of and visualise it flying away in a balloon, washing away in the sea or burning in a fire.
  • Write: Make a note of what you want to release and then burn the paper or tear it up to symbolise your letting go.

Do we need props for moon rituals?

Some people like to add crystals, candles or flowers to create a beautiful space and burn some sage or palo santo. Do whatever feels good for you. It’s your ritual and your time.

When should you perform a moon ritual?

You can do a moon ritual in the days leading up to it, on the day itself, or even in the days after. Yes, the energy is strongest on the actual new and full moons, but if that day doesn’t work for you, don’t worry! The surrounding days are just as valid.
