Charitable events and social causes are the constant North Star of Queen Sofía’s agenda, but the island of Ibiza holds a special place in her heart for another reason: its gastronomy.

Whenever her commitments to noble causes bring her to the white isle, there is a specific gourmet route she follows. With her trademark discretion, the Queen Emerita consistently returns to three specific Balearic gems to enjoy the perfect blend of traditional flavors and Mediterranean views.

During a trip to the Pityusic Islands, Sofia did not want to miss the chance to try the island's delicious gastronomy, based on a pantry with a heavy presence of fish and shellfish. First, she visited the Sa Calma restaurant in the Ibiza Nueva Marina, which offers spectacular views of the sea and the island's historic center, making it one of the best spots to enjoy Ibiza's famous sunsets.

It is well known that the Queen does not eat red meat; her diet is essentially vegetarian, though she does occasionally eat eggs and fish. At this restaurant, which focuses on Mediterranean essence and respect for local traditions and finest ingredients, seafood occupies a prominent place on the menu.

Every day, they receive the freshest fish from the bay and shellfish such as Ibiza shrimp, the typical "frita de pulpo" (fried octopus), or sautéed fresh squid. These recommendations were likely among those chosen by Queen Sofia.

Traditional Gastronomy with Ibizan Touches

For one of her dinners, she chose another location very close to the previous one: El Náutico, also located in the Marina. Directed by chef Pau Barba, the kitchen opens from morning for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They define themselves as "a restaurant of honest cuisine using local and seasonal products."

The establishment's offerings nod to Ibizan cuisine, but also to Spanish and international styles. There are various salads, one of the favorite dishes of Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia's grandmother, including the payesa salad, which is very similar to the well-known ensalada campera.

Among the appetizers are tempting suggestions such as fried ray, grilled red shrimp, or Norway lobsters from Formentera. For main courses, there is a large section dedicated to rice dishes (lobster, fish and seafood, vegetables, etc.), though it is unknown if Queen Sofia opted for one of those, the grilled fish and seafood platter, the lobster with fried eggs, a very Balearic dish, or the bullit de peix, a flavorful fisherman's stew.

Ibiza offers a vast and vibrant gastronomic landscape, from rustic taverns to its five Michelin-starred icons. Yet, amidst this wealth of options, the restaurants chosen by Queen Sofía remain the ultimate benchmark for those seeking the true essence of the island, proving that even with endless new openings, the Queen’s favorite coastal classics never go out of style.
