Boricua flavor is officially world-famous! The traditional Puerto Rican coquito has just claimed the #1 spot in the “Top 100 Alcoholic Mixed Drinks in the World”, according to the global culinary guide Taste Atlas. This victory celebrates a drink and honors a cultural tradition that’s pure Puerto Rican joy in a bottle.

The coquito, often dubbed “Puerto Rican eggnog”, is far more than a holiday cocktail; it’s a family ritual, a symbol of togetherness, and a taste of island pride. Each Christmas season, kitchens across Puerto Rico come alive with the scent of coconut, cinnamon, and rum as families blend up their secret versions of this creamy classic.

Now, that tradition has been officially recognized on the world stage. In the new Taste Atlas ranking, coquito topped legendary drinks like Spain’s sangría, Cuba’s mojito, and Peru’s pisco sour, solidifying its reputation as an international favorite.

Taste Atlas describes it as “a traditional cocktail similar to eggnog, typically prepared and enjoyed during the Christmas season. It’s made with a combination of coconut milk, rum, condensed milk, and vanilla, though every family has its own version.”

Global Love for a Local Favorite

The guide also notes how coquito’s smooth, tropical sweetness continues to win hearts far beyond the island. Its comforting flavor profile and creamy texture make it a holiday essential wherever Puerto Ricans gather—from San Juan to New York and beyond.

And it’s no wonder. The drink captures everything about the Puerto Rican spirit, as it is warm, welcoming, festive, and just a little bit mischievous.

How to Make Authentic Puerto Rican Coquito

Here’s a classic Puerto Rican coquito recipe that stays true to its roots while leaving room for personal flair.

Ingredients:

  • 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
  • 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 can (15 oz) cream of coconut (like Coco López or Goya)
  • 1 can (13.5 oz) coconut milk
  • 1½ cups Puerto Rican white rum (Don Q or Bacardí works great)
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (plus more for garnish)
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1–2 tablespoons shredded coconut for extra flavor

Instructions:

  1. Combine all ingredients in a blender and mix until smooth and creamy.
  2. Taste and adjust rum or sweetness to preference.
  3. Pour into glass bottles and refrigerate for at least 2 hours (overnight is best).
  4. Shake well before serving.
  5. Serve chilled in small glasses and sprinkle a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg on top.
  6. This recipe makes about one quart, perfect for gifting or sharing at your next holiday get-together.

A Sip of Pride

Each year, Taste Atlas curates a list of the world’s best cocktails, grouped by region and flavor profile. But this year’s win feels extra special; it’s a nod to the creativity and heart of Puerto Rican culture.
