New York Fashion Week has a new dress code, and it looks suspiciously like something pulled from an exceptionally stylish prep-school closet. Across the Spring 2027 shows and the streets of Manhattan during NYFW in September 2026, familiar preppy fashion signatures kept appearing: pleated skirts, rugby stripes, Oxford shirts, sweater vests, loafers, polos, roomy blazers, and plenty of red, white, and navy.
But this isn't the buttoned-up preppy style associated with perfectly coordinated country-club wardrobes. The 2026 version is looser, sexier, and considerably less concerned with following the rules.

Why Preppy Style Is Taking Over NYFW 2026
There is a noticeable difference between this revival and the ultra-polished prep cycles of the past.
At Tommy Hilfiger's Plaza show, collegiate style met sportswear. Oversized rugby shirts appeared with pleated skirts, quarter-zips slipped beneath blazers, and traditional Oxford blue and chino beige were punctuated with brighter yellow and red. Hilfiger summed up the mood backstage: "Preppy is back in the zeitgeist."

Instead of wearing a blazer, pleated skirt, and loafers as one perfectly coordinated uniform, NYFW's fashion crowd is breaking those pieces apart and pairing them with unexpected proportions, denim, bare legs, oversized layers, and sharper accessories.
The Celebrity Preppy Outfits Worth Copying
The photos from fashion week show just how broad the new prep vocabulary has become.
One of the clearest takes is the red, navy and white collegiate outfit. Here, Paris Hilton wore, a cable-knit V-neck vest, pleated navy mini and striped cardigan could easily veer into literal school-uniform territory. Instead, sheer tights, embellished pumps, narrow sunglasses and a whimsical dog-shaped handbag turn the look into playful fashion-week dressing.

The second outfit takes the opposite approach. A striped polo-style knit worn with loose blue jeans and a black leather jacket strips prep down to its most casual ingredients. The combination is particularly useful because it doesn't require buying an entirely new wardrobe. It's also an easy transitional dressing trick. New York's September weather doesn't always cooperate with fall fashion, so pairing substantial knitwear with bare legs offers a practical compromise.

Rather than eliminating prep's history, designers are making the historical references part of the appeal.
