If you’ve ever tried a really good K-beauty sunscreen and wondered why so many American SPFs still feel heavier, stickier or harder to wear under makeup, a newly approved UV filter could help close that gap.

BEMT, a sunscreen ingredient already familiar to fans of Korean and other international formulas, is newly approved for use in U.S. sunscreens. And now, we’re starting to see what that could mean for the products hitting American shelves.

Among the first new launches to feature it are Neutrogena’s Ultra Sheer Daily Face Sunscreen SPF 70 and Clear Face Sunscreen SPF 60, two face sunscreens arriving for fall 2026.

And that could be a pretty big deal for anyone who chooses SPF based not only on the number printed on the bottle, but on how it actually feels on their face.

A New Sunscreen that Feels Like a K-Beauty Moment

One of the reasons K-beauty sunscreens have developed such a devoted following is simply because many are genuinely pleasant to wear.

Instead of treating sunscreen like the annoying final step you tolerate because you know you should, Korean beauty has helped popularize formulas that behave more like skincare. Think lighter textures, comfortable finishes and SPF that plays nicely with the rest of your morning routine.

¡HOLA! had the chance to go inside the Neutrogena’s newly built, state-of-the-art New Jersey lab to see where that approach is taking shape. There, we had the chance to learn about the science behind the new formulas directly from the scientists developing them. They combine BEMT with Neutrogena’s Cloud-Tech technology, designed to create an ultralight, invisible feel on the skin while providing broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection.

BEMT, also known as bemotrizinol, is especially interesting because it represents something U.S. sunscreen shoppers have been waiting a very long time to see.

For consumers, however, the chemistry is only half the story. The real question is will I actually want to put this on my face every morning? That is where these launches get interesting.

The Sunscreen Texture Problem Is Especially Relevant for Latino Consumers

How sunscreen looks and feels can be especially important for people with darker skin tones, where visible chalky, ashy, or pale residue – also known as white cast– and an unflattering finish can make an otherwise effective formula much less appealing for everyday use.

Research cited by the brand found that 52.3% of people in populations with darker skin tones consider the finish on the skin an important factor when deciding which sunscreen to purchase. That matters for Latino consumers, whose skin tones span an enormous range.

A sunscreen can have impressive protection on paper, but if it feels greasy, leaves noticeable residue or doesn’t work with makeup, reaching for it every single morning becomes a harder sell.

BEMT Could Change the U.S. Sunscreen Conversation

This is the part of the launch beauty obsessives will want to know about. BEMT is the first new sunscreen filter approved for use in the United States in 27 years. The filter has already been used in sunscreens outside the U.S., including formulas associated with the K-beauty category.

Its arrival opens the door to a new generation of American sunscreens that could potentially combine serious UV protection with the kind of elegant textures consumers increasingly expect from facial skincare.

And expectations have changed. People no longer necessarily want a separate, noticeably sunscreen-like product sitting on top of their skincare. They want SPF to disappear into the routine. It needs to work with moisturizer, makeup and whatever else is going on your face that morning, and this option does that.

That is arguably one of K-beauty’s biggest contributions to the sunscreen conversation, and Neutrogena bringing that philosophy into an affordable, widely recognizable product could make the concept much more mainstream.

  • Ultra Sheer Daily Face Sunscreen SPF 70 is the one to watch:  Its formula pairs high SPF protection with antioxidants to help defend against free radicals, but its biggest selling point may be the texture.
  • Neutrogena Clear Face SPF 60 is made With acne-prone skin in mind: There’s also good news if breakouts are one of the reasons you’re picky about sunscreen. This product uses the same BEMT and Cloud-Tech combination but is specifically designed for acne-prone skin. Along with broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection and antioxidants, the formula contains niacinamide and vitamin E and is designed not to clog pores.
