Malia Ann Obama continues to prove that some of the best celebrity street style is also the least complicated.
The 28-year-old filmmaker was spotted enjoying a relaxed Labor Day lunch in Los Feliz, California, on September 7, stepping out in an effortlessly cool look that felt perfectly suited to the laid-back Los Angeles neighborhood.
For the outing, Malia paired a fitted white tank top with dramatically oversized black jeans, creating an easy contrast between the streamlined top and the loose, slouchy silhouette of her denim. The jeans sat low on the hips and pooled slightly around her feet, adding to the relaxed, ’90s-inspired feel of the ensemble.
Rather than dressing up the look with sneakers or heels, the former first daughter kept things decidedly casual in barely-there black flip-flops, one of the minimalist footwear trends that has made a major return in recent seasons.
She completed the outfit with narrow rectangular sunglasses and an oversized black leather tote worn over one shoulder. The roomy bag complemented the exaggerated proportions of her jeans while maintaining the understated palette of black and white.
Malia's beauty look was equally relaxed. She wore her long auburn hair partially pulled back, with braided detailing along the crown and lengths cascading well past her waist.
With minimal-looking makeup, a fresh white manicure and coordinating pedicure, she allowed her textured hairstyle to become one of the standout elements of the look.
The combination has increasingly become something of a signature for Malia. Rather than leaning into polished Hollywood dressing when she's off duty, the filmmaker regularly gravitates toward oversized silhouettes, comfortable footwear and unexpected proportions, giving even basic wardrobe staples a distinctly individual feel.
Her latest appearance came as she enjoyed lunch with journalist Joshuah Bearman at Little Dom's in Los Feliz. Photographs from the afternoon showed the pair chatting over their meal before stepping outside together. Malia appeared in high spirits, smiling as she left the restaurant and sharing a warm goodbye with Bearman.
Malia's life behind the camera:
The casual outing comes as the eldest daughter of former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama continues carving out an identity in Hollywood separate from her famous surname.
Professionally, she has chosen to go by Malia Ann, using her first and middle names for her filmmaking work. Her move behind the camera has also coincided with the emergence of a distinctive personal style, one far removed from the formal wardrobe associated with her years growing up in the White House.
