Michelle Obama has found an unexpected similarity between Megan Thee Stallion and her youngest daughter, Sasha Obama.
The former first lady welcomed Megan Thee Stallion to the August 12 episode of IMO with Michelle Obama & Craig Robinson, and the conversation quickly became personal. Michelle revealed that something about Megan’s personality felt instantly familiar because it reminded her of Sasha.
In promotional footage from the episode, Michelle described Megan’s energy as something that “feels like family” and said the rapper reminds her of her youngest daughter.
Why Michelle Obama Says Megan Thee Stallion Reminds Her of Sasha
Michelle’s observation centered on Megan’s energy and the comfortable, familiar feeling Michelle experienced around her.
The episode arrived on August 12, with Megan joining the siblings for a wide-ranging conversation. Coverage of the appearance confirmed Megan as the featured guest and showed Michelle and the Houston rapper arriving in coordinated all-white looks.
Even before the full episode arrived, one lighthearted moment from promotional footage captured the chemistry between the women. Megan, who is known for her statuesque height, was greeted enthusiastically by Michelle, with a moment from the preview prompting fans to highlight the line, “I just love when everybody’s TALL.”
Sasha Obama Already Has a Megan Thee Stallion Connection
There is another fun layer to Michelle Obama comparing Megan Thee Stallion to Sasha. Back in 2020, Barack Obama revealed that Sasha helped him compile his annual list of favorite songs. “As usual, I had some valuable consultation from our family music guru, Sasha,” Barack wrote at the time.
And what landed on that playlist? Megan Thee Stallion and Beyoncé’s massive “Savage Remix.” Barack’s list also included music from Dua Lipa, Bad Bunny, H.E.R., J. Cole, Mac Miller, Travis Scott, and others.
So years before Michelle sat across from Megan and saw similarities between the rapper and her daughter, Sasha was already helping put Megan’s music on her dad’s playlist.
That is quite the full-circle connection.
Michelle Obama and Megan Thee Stallion Have More in Common Than Expected
Megan’s appearance on IMO also offered an interesting meeting between two women whose careers exist in very different spaces but who have both dealt with intense public scrutiny.
Megan has built a career that stretches beyond music. The Houston native graduated from Texas Southern University in 2021 while simultaneously maintaining her career as one of hip-hop’s most recognizable stars.
Michelle, meanwhile, has increasingly used IMO as a space for candid conversations about family, relationships, identity, and navigating adulthood.
Sasha Obama Has Mostly Stayed Out of the Spotlight
Sasha was only seven years old when Barack Obama became president in January 2009, meaning much of her childhood unfolded under extraordinary public attention. As an adult, however, she has maintained a far lower public profile.
Sasha graduated from the University of Southern California in 2023 with a degree in sociology, with Michelle, Barack, and older sister Malia Obama attending the ceremony.
Now 25, Sasha continues to make occasional appearances with her family without building the kind of highly public celebrity career that could easily have accompanied the Obama name.
Michelle has nevertheless offered occasional glimpses into her relationship with her daughters. In a birthday message for Sasha, Michelle wrote, “I’m so proud of the woman you’ve become. Love you always!”
